WORLD OF DEATH Ep. 77 – Malthusianism / Manburger

Hey there, loyal viewers!

It’s time to jump start the week with another gruesome twosome from everyone’s favorite horror curators.  As we approach the big premiere of INVADERS, we thought we could serve you a couple of worthy appetizers today.  We have two short films that feature some serious macabre mastication.  If you’re the type to sit down and unfold your napkin, gently placing it in your lap, these films aren’t for you.  If you’re one for tucking that bib right into the collar of your shirt, wide-eyed and salivating… please proceed!
The first course on the menu tonight is a little foreign cuisine, all the way from Spain.  Director Ferran Brooks brings us MALTHUSIANISM.  Mal-whatta??  Yeah I know…I had no fucking clue either.  Lucky for us, endless information is at our fingertips 24 hours a day.  Webster’s Dictionary defines it as “of or relating to malthus or to his theory that population tends to increase at a faster rate than its means of subsistence and that unless it is checked by moral restraint or by disease, famine, war, or other disaster widespread poverty and degradation inevitably result.”  Now you can say you walked away from this a little smarter.  This one centers around a mother trying to convince her daughter to eat her dinner.  Usually, parents are fighting with their kids to eat their vegetables, but as you may have guessed already, their dinner is a little more meaty.  It’s anchored by a quirky performance of the mother, who everyone hopes doesn’t end up being their in-law someday.  A perfect production design accents the story beautifully and ends on a final shot that is surreal and memorable.  This one should get your appetite going.
The second and final course is a fun one called MANBURGER by director William Wymore.  In this short, a man is sitting in his favorite dining establishment, ordering their signature burger, the Maneater.  The man asks the waiter/chef/owner what’s the special ingredient is that makes the burger so damn delicious?  As he explains the process of the cattle selections and butchering, we get to see what really on through the magic of cinema.  As you can probably guess from the title of this movie, we can all safely assume the burgers aren’t exactly Angus (unless his name was Angus…).  I really dig the practical effects in this one.  If Bob’s Burger’s had the same kind of twist this one has, I’d probably be more inclined to watch it.
Stay tuned for the third and largest course of our buffet this Thursday with the INVADERS premiere.  Until then we hope these abhorrent appetizers will hold you over.  Remember to use your best table manners and give your compliments to the chefs!  Go check us out on Twitter and Instagram too!
Bon appétit!
