WORLD OF DEATH Ep. 83 – Run, Run, Radiation / Mattress

Published

on

Happy Memorial Day, folks!  I’d like to start out today’s episode by first giving thanks to all the brave men and women who gave their lives honorably in the duty of combat for our nation.  Thank you.  Now we all know mostly everyone is off work today and most businesses have shut down in observance of the holiday, but not us!  Nope.  Fuck that.  We are here to entertain you rain or shine.  We only hope that everyone is enjoying their extended weekends.  Spending time with the family and grilling in the backyard is a great tradition.  Especially if you’re a family of cannibals and those annoying neighbor kids won’t stop bouncing the fucking basketball.

Speaking of family, today’s films are featuring some of our very own WORLD OF DEATH family!  That’s right, folks.  We have one film coming from contributing writer/editor, B.A. “I Wish My Name Was Marion Cobretti” Lewandowski and another one starring my lovely and talented co-writer from the country up north, Jessie Robbins.  So away we go!

First up, B.A. Lewandowski steps up to the plate as a director in his experimental short, RUN, RUN, RADIATION.  This is usually the part in my review where I give a brief synopsis of what you’re about to see.  I’m still trying to figure out what I just saw, so good luck.  Usually, you would say that’s a bad thing for narrative films.  However, this isn’t a narrative film; this is experimental!  You can show Willy Wonka blowing Donald Trump in a slaughterhouse under a waxing moon and just throw in a few crazy filters and lingering cross-fades.  Voila.  Art.  Unfortunately, no one is blowing anyone in this film.  It’s a man running.  Running from radiation.  That shit is everywhere, apparently.  If your favorite part of Forrest Gump was when he ran across the country for like a year, then you’ll love this one.  Short of an actual story, this is an exercise in experimental editing at it’s finest.  Considering Lewandowski is a professional editor – he has edited most of the WOD premiere trailers – it comes to no surprise that it’s the strong point of this movie.  There are some cool establishing shots and some acceptable makeup effects, but the editing is fucking ace.  This would actually be a great film for aspiring filmmakers and editors to get some ideas on how to put your concepts together in an interesting way.  Sometimes chronology is boring.  Sometimes, your shots don’t come out the way you planned and you have to put it all in a blender and make a movie smoothie.  That’s what this is.  A fucking movie smoothie.  So slurp it up!

Alright, so getting back to normal films, our second showcasing comes from Canada.  Director Nigel Jones brings us his short, MATTRESS.  This one centers around a woman getting into her nightly slumber routine and finally dozes off.  She suddenly wake in the middle of the night to bright lights and the sounds of rustling plastic on the floor.  It’s her roommate, perhaps?  I don’t know any other scenario where two women would be hanging out in their undies, without alarming each other.  All I can say is that she probably ate the other one’s last pickle or some shit, because the roommate is NOT happy.  This unhappy roommate is portrayed by our very own Jessie Robbins.  She does a fine job of going homicidal and basking in her own insanity.  There were some interesting choices for the kill scene done in editing to give the illusion of a bludgeoning.  The highlight of this film was Ms. Robbins radiating and glowing, laying on a mattress like she just got a little action.  However, it wasn’t exactly the action we all hope to get every night.  Bravo to her on her performance and we hope to see more of her in the future.

Check out all of WORLD OF DEATH’s trailers and other films reviews in previous episodes for more work by Ben (Lewandowski) and Jessie.  They’re two extremely talented people who I also have the honor of calling my friends and colleagues.

Enjoy the show and enjoy your Monday off!

Roll it!
