WORLD OF DEATH Ep. 121 – Peephole

Published

on

Hello there Friends and Neighbors, so you are here looking for another episode of your favorite horror series? Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to pry. So many people looking for an escape, but what are they running away from? I mean, it is more like we are in our own private traps, clamped in where none can get out. We scratch and we claw but only at the air, only at each other… and for all of it, we never budge an inch. Some of us might say we deliberately step into our trap, others say we are born into it. Either way, I don’t mind it anymore. But perhaps I am a special case, like you.

Take the subject of today’s episode. A run of the mill motel manager living in his own trap, but he has a hobby. It is a strange hobby to fill, but then again a hobby should pass the time, not fill it. In Douglas Cook’s film, PEEPHOLE, we watch a cautionary tale that will eviscerate the preconceptions one may have about the safety and sanctity of the motel. But you would expect nothing less now would you? Yes, this manager utilizes a peephole to record subjects both unaware and unwilling to be part of these films. Preconceptions are often a killer, as this manager soon finds out. When a murder appears imminent, our subject discovers that one can’t call the police to report a crime one witnessed whilst committing a crime themselves.

Brilliantly edited, with foreshadowing and excellent effects, this film brings suspense, shock and comedy together with excellence. A classic morality tale, wherein one discovers that sometimes the hero is in fact the villain, and worse, sometimes the villain is the victim and in the end, the victim is in fact the true hero. Sometimes it is best to just leave people to their business. After all, people always mean well. They may cluck their tongues and shake their heads, but they mean well. It is a strange tale, but completely worth watching twice or more if you have the time, and don’t forget to come back twice a week for more World of Death horrors!

Until next fright,
~Eric Breitenbach
