‘Friday the 13th’ Reboot Waiting On Script and Not Committed to Found Footage Or 3D (Exclusive)

With both The Purge: Anarchy (read my review) and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles hitting screens within two weeks of each other, Platinum Dunes producer Brad Fuller has a lot on his plate but took some time out of his schedule earlier this week to speak with us about a few of his company’s projects. Our full interview with him will be hitting tomorrow, but first we wanted to clear up some stuff concerning the upcoming Friday the 13th film, which is due in theaters November 13th, 2015.

Let’s get it out of the way. I’m a huge fan of the 2009 reboot. Last month I went on the record by saying, “for those of you who think that the most recent entry is cynical, I actually don’t think it is so much. Remember, the studio had zero respect for the franchise during its first incarnation, these were turn and burn gigs that people were turning down left and right because there was no money and the powers that be insisted on unrealistic schedules to keep the money flowing in. I’d argue that the folks behind the 2009 version actually cared more about the quality of the film than most of the people involved in the original sequels (especially later on).” While I don’t love all the rumors that have been circulating, the goodwill from the 2009 entry alone has me very much in an optimistic wait and see mode.

And Fuller’s quotes today only help that:

What’s the status of the 2015 Friday the 13th? We’ve heard found footage and we’ve heard 3D. Have either of those shifted?

I can’t make any determination about found footage or 3D until we have a story that we all agree on and that we all like. The story is the most important thing and the way you tell the story, to me, is secondary. We have some writers writing but, because we don’t have a script that everyone has signed off on, I can’t speak to how the story is meant to be told. All of those things have been considered. But no decisions have been made. We don’t know what story is being told.”

Fuller also confirmed to me that the very talented David Bruckner (The Signal, V/H/S) is still onboard which has me just as hopeful as the news that all avenues seem to apparently be open for the film.

Check back tomorrow for my entire interview with Fuller.

  • CrackTheSkye1990

Well that’s good that David Bruckner is still going to direct. Hopefully he has more control over the film than platinum dunes. If they go with the found footage route, I’d imagine it’d be like the Tuesday the 17th segment in vhs.

  • Khy

Glad to hear Brad speak out about the new film for the first time since January but my God, they still don’t know where they wanna go with this? Well they did say they have some writers writing…so hopefully he means they have a concept and idea . Blah, tired of hearing the same old same old. November 2015 may seem like a while away but it’s really not. At least David is still on board.

    • CrackTheSkye1990

I wonder what writers they’re choosing. I liked swift and shannons winter setting idea but honestly they can’t write for shit. Their characters are so unlikable that you want them to be killed. I hope they get rid of the sympathy aspect for jason and don’t give out too much of his background and motive. Less is more when it comes to that. I guess it’s for the best that the movie is delayed as they don’t have their ideas for the movie set yet.

      • Khy

Well I asked Shannon and Swift just yesterday on twitter and they confirmed they’re no longer involved. So they’re out. And that’s what’s bugging- WHO IS WRITTING THIS? lol. Like do they have set writers or are they just letting different writers have a crack at it until they find the right guy(or girl) or what? Too many questions and mysteries surrounding this movie. I’m hoping that once Purge and TMNT are both released that PD and Paramount will be able to sit down and actually get this rolling. I’ll be annoyed if it’s pushed back to 2016 or 2017. There’s no reason why it should take that long to write a decent Friday The 13th movie. The first four movies were written within weeks and are still great flicks.

      • SuperKilla

You’re dead right about Shannon and Swift. They have great ideas and their hearts are in the right place but the dialog that comes out of their characters mouths makes me wonder if they ever get out of the house. The only thing I disliked about Freddy vs. Jason. was some of the dialog and same thing with the F13 reboot too but also some of death scenes should have been more creative.
This is Friday the 13 we’re talkin’ bout here and the MPAA seems to be a lot friendlier nowadays than in the 80’s.

      • J Jett

CrackTheSkye, i agree 100000000%!! Shannon & Swift are horrible writers (i use the term “writer” loosely).

  • Dave

Why not ask him why there is a need for another reboot? To most this has to be completely worthless. Since WB/New Line now has the rights back(for a few more years), why not just make a sequel to part 8, or at least a sequel to the remake from 2009?

    • Khy

Well that’s the thing. We don’t know what they’re truly doing. If it’s truly a reboot or if they’re just using reboot as a loose term for a stand alone sequel. We won’t know until they officially tell us what concept they’re going with.

      • Dave

That is completely fair. Maybe in the full article being released tomorrow BD will ask Fuller that question. I really hope so.

        • Khy

Same. I hope more questions are asked.

    • James

I’d be much happier with a sequel to the reboot set back at camp. They laid some fine groundwork, now they just need to bring it back to its roots.

      • J Jett

        James i agree w/ you.

      • Dave

        Better idea than another reboot.

    • J Jett

Dave PLEASE NO MORE LAME “ZOMBIE” JASON!!! why anyone would want a sequel to any parts past part 4 is a mystery to me. once Jason became “zombified” the series sucked. keep Jason fast, running and brutal. no more slow, lumbering able to catch the fastest runner even he walks v-e-r-y s-l-o-w.

      • Dave

If I had to choose between a 2nd reboot in just 6 years, or a sequel to the original franchise, I would easily pick a sequel to the original. Makes far more sense.

  • Khy

For those of you who are worried about found footage, I actually don’t see it going that route any more. Paranormal Activity The Marked Ones made the least money in the entire franchise, Devil’s Due(which is not by Paramount, but Universal) came out soon after it and bombed. Then Paramount immediately moved their next found footage movie Almanac from a Feb 2014 release to sometime in 2015 and then they pushed PA5 all the way until 2016….that is not a coincidence. I don’t think they’re as “found footage” happy as they once were.

    • CrackTheSkye1990

I think area 51 will be the last found footage movie to come out in mainstream theaters. It got it’s official r rating last month so we now know that it’s a matter of when and not if. I guess the movie has gone through so many rewrites and reshoots because the test screening in 2010 was garbage. Hopefully the final product is decent.

      • Trippy Leatherface

Paranormal activity 5 and the rest of the sequels also

    • EvanDickson

      Devils Due was Fox

    • James

Almanac was one of the only found footage movies I was curious about.

    • Trippy Leatherface

Paranormal activity the marked ones is one of the best in the franchise and is way better than 4 I think people where disappointed with 4 and did not feel like seeing the marked ones

      • Krug09

That is exactly why i did not see MO after that piece of trash 4 i had enough of PA. I love 1-3 btw.

    • Krug09

I know… I laughed when i heard 3D and found Footage. 3D died back in 2011 and FF movies are ending if not over… Those concepts are already dead and old. I am confused about a reboot though. Why not just make FT13TH part 2 but don’t follow up where the 1st left off? Because i don’t want to see that freakishly big pretty boy or that chick ever again!!!

  • Lyle Chip Chipperson

Reboot? What is it, a retarded boot or sumthin? ttssssss

  • The_Banshee

It’s the same thing with the Nightmare on Elm Street reboot. That was a really decent NOES movie. The fact that fans complained so much, when it was better than all but 3 of the original movies is baffling and pathetic to me. I was disappointed the first time I watched it, but now I realize it’s fucking good and anytime someone hates on it, I just lose respect for them. You gotta think for yourself in this world and they had a new take on the franchise and irrational hatred DESTROYED chances of getting more entries in the series. What a bunch of knee-jerk, bandwagon idiots.

    • Nick M.

I agree. I really liked the NOES remake but people act like its the worst in the franchise, when in reality its actually one of the franchises best.

    • James

Personally I prefer the new one to the original. Can’t say I liked it as much as the third, but it’s nowhere close to the awful film everyone says it is.

    • wehoaks

Irrational hatred? Please it made buckets of money. They would’ve made a sequel if they wanted to regardless of people’s opinions. And btw the remake was fucking terrible. Also, telling people to think for themselves yet saying you lose respect for anyone that thinks differently from you not only makes you a hypocrite, it also makes you a fucking idiot.

      • Weresmurf

I thought Jackie did a decent job, he did his best, but the script… oh the script…

        • Adam Clifton

Not to mention the director who only made the film so that he could get closer to Michael Bay. Rooney Mara didn’t seem to have much respect for the film either and it showed on-screen

    • Weresmurf

The biggest thing working against ANOES was the reuse of Nancy and original characters. Had they not used Nancy and set it years later, once Freddy had been forgotten and had them all as new characters, it would’ve been far more accepted I guarantee you.

      • The_Banshee

I agree it should have been a ‘possible sequel’.. it’s got that ‘years later’ aspect built into the franchise since the first movie so totally.

    • J Jett

The Banshee, i’m following your advice. i’m thinking for myself and i happen to think the ELM ST. remake was very bland and forgettable despite having a very good cast. so, i followed your advice and thought for myself. chances are you’ll “lose respect” for me (which is fine). i think you meant to say “ANYONE WHO DOESN’T LIKE THIS MOVIE AND DOESN’T AGREE WITH ME IS AN IDIOT!”. lol.

      • The_Banshee

I just call it like I see it, and I think people didn’t even give the reboot a chance, and frankly that’s just their problem. It was a good movie, so fuck them honestly. So easy to hate on something

        • wehoaks

It is easy. And you’re proving it each time you cry you ass off because peoples opinion differ from your own.

    • Krug09

That’s not necessarily true. PD had other projects to work on and if you look at their other remakes they never made a second. Only a Chainsaw prequel. I thought that remake wasn’t bad i enjoyed watching it in theaters and at home but it sort of sucked. First of all the acting was horrible, second the characters sucked. It was missing moments of the characters having fun. It was all gloomy shit. Then theres the whole pedophile angle and the dumb ass cast wondering if he did it or not… I am guessing since he is murdering all of you he did it! It had problems and i think only one movie with that Freddy was more then enough. Freddy was very uneven in the remake. Putting aside that the makeup never stood the same.he was all serious but cracked jokes? Uneven.

      • The_Banshee

You are right, it’s not necessarily true that it would’ve had a sequel, but I totally disagree on the Freddy characterization being ‘uneven’.. I think it was brilliant. He had serious depth as a character. He plays the victim, classic psychopathic behavior, and pretends it’s the children’s fault and he was so innocent. His personality in the flashbacks was this simple kind guy, but the occasional comment would belie his innocence (when he is coaxing young Nancy into see his paintings or whatever) so it makes perfect sense that he would play the victim, be deadly serious, and yet drop in cruel taunts and quips.. he can’t help it, he is an evil fuck

        • Krug09

Ok. Too each their own. I wouldn’t disagree with all of that. Even though i didn’t like the “did he or didn’t he” angle. I did like the pre burnt scenes at the school and interaction with the children. (Just going off my memory because the last time i watched it was on tv 3 years ago) but i found it to be uneven because of those scenes (even though i enjoyed them). It didn’t seem like the same guy so possibly and because most don’t like the backstory had they went into more of it i and let it develop i probably would have enjoyed that character more. It was like a night and day type thing between Fred and “Freddy” Krueger. Now after talking about it i realize as well, That is why they had to limit the backstory and make him seem “innocent” they couldn’t show the real him.

What do you think of the original film? Or lets say my favorites 1,2,3 and New Nightmare?

  • REC03

lol. Brad always has the the right things to say to get the fans excited. i’ve fallen for it every single time. not this time. sorry not sorry.

  • J Jett

not to sound like a jerk but this is NON-news. he neither confirms nor denies anything. nothing new was learned. non-news.

    • Khy

Yeah, sadly it’s true. We’re right back where we were in January, which is disheartening.

  • Khy

Evan is this ALL he said about Friday or did he say a tad bit more in the full interview being released tomorrow?

  • wehoaks

Man this site is lame. 1. This is non news. 2. The first 75% of this article is Evan’s opinion. 3. Quoting yourself? Jesus really Evan? Just remove a couple ribs so you can actually blow yourself already.

as long its not a found footage time film. i’m happy and i would love to see them show how jason survived from drowning when he was a kid, show the mom either saving him or bringing back to life using a ritual. that would explain why hes hard to kill and the reason why he’s so strong , but at least gotta have kane hodder do a cameo as the father or something or someone in the town. if they ever make a sequel to nightmare on elm street remake. then they should use what in right now. so freddy can use it to kill off his victims.

  • ThunderDragoon

This is nothing that we already don’t know. I guess non-news is better than no news, though, so I’m not complaining because at least we know it’s still happening. I’m looking at you, Jeepers Creepers 3.

  • Sounds like it’s not committed to anything, yet it’s still labeled as a reboot on here. Am I the only one who notices this?

  • baronterror

Good news altogether. Not dead in the water. I dont neccessarily want another reboot but frankly I want a 13th movie. Been waiting for it all my life. Heheh

  • SaltSlasher

I am almost too scared to see this fall through the cracks. Honestly I rather get a found footage movie, then no movie at all. Cause if it kills the franchise, it isn’t like were gonna get another one anytime soon anyway.

    • Khy

Well they still have time. It’s still well over a year from release. As long as production begins by early 2015 we’ll be fine but they definietly need to get off their asses.

  • Garbageface

Your killer exclusive is that they don’t have a script done yet and no one knows what kind of movie it’s going to be?

    • Khy

      Lmao exactly. VERY misleading headline.

  • Krug09

I still want a snow setting!

    • Do people even go camping in the winter? Maybe they do, but I don’t think it’s a popular thing. Might take away from the classic “hike in the woods summer time feel and girls going skinny dipping” if they did so.

      • Krug09

LOL, very true… I didn’t think of it logically. IDK how it would work out but maybe it could be a story thats not about campers. Maybe a sky resort is made a half mile from Jason’s camp.

        • Yeah, could be something like that. It would look cool to see Jason slash blood all over the snow. After all, we have no idea what he does in the winter time. Mostly though, I would just prefer another movie back to original camp feel of the 80’s and 90’s. Seems like we’ve been getting a little distant with trying to be too creative.

          • Adam Clifton

How about loggers come into Jason’s woods to take down trees, not realizing that Jason Voorhees is alive and well and more than eager to kill anyone who enters his woods. It’s up to the foreman’s daughter to survive Jason’s wrath as the trees and the bodies begin to fall – Jason = the ultimate eco-warrior

          • Sounds too eco friendly, but maybe for a good comedy.

          • Adam Clifton

They could tone the eco-theme down, but I think it could work. Jason putting someone feet-first through the woodchipper… another victim getting a bear trap to the head…

          • Krug09

I hear you. I just want a good movie. That comes first before if its set in snow or not. Idk why but just picturing Jason give chase in the snow, stalking and like you said blood splatter. it seems really cool to me. It would be easy to imagine victims having a hard time getting away as well. Maybe it would be hard for Jason to at times but at least we won’t see that shit where a lady trips over a tree branch! It could be interesting.

  • Walter Whities

I just want to see a F13 film that is actually good and not just a popcorn movie. this series began by ripping off the Halloween because of its success and has given us recycled movies ever since. it would be absolutely amazing to see some good writers do something great with the series. Jason deserves a great horror movie!
I don’t think it will be this movie though considering that they are even talking about 3D or found footage. Still ripping off current trends? Fuck man can you guys just focus on the quality of the movie

    • Friday The 13th did not rip off Halloween! Jason didn’t become the main character until the 2nd movie & It wouldn’t be the first time the movie was in 3D.

      • Danny D

Actually F13 DID rip off Halloween. Go watch behind the scenes footage. The director, Sean Cunningham, even admits to it. He says something along the lines, “We wanted to copy the movie Halloween.” So essentially what we got with the original F13 was Halloween with a spin on it.

        • James

Exactly. Friday did rip off Halloween and more than one giallo. Heck number two took a lot from twitch of the death nerve. Friday has never been original.

    • Khy

A fun popcorn movie is fine with me. That’s what this series is. I just want something enjoyable like the first six movies. That’s Friday The 13th to me. No need to try and turn the series into something it’s absolutely not.

    • SaltSlasher

Jason deserves a real, premium channel, TV series that allows the character to grow. Think about it, Hannibal was regarded as one of the best, yet we barely got a few hours of his movies, with little screen time, and it was still far from the books in detail. Now we got his TV show, that dives deep.

Jason could run a TV show like how super heros run a comic book. There is so much potential, but few writers who could handle pulling off such an amazing stunt, leaves us with “lets do a found footage”. Jason is as unique as is Spiderman is to Fantastic Four. F4 was done first, and then Spidy came, but the original isn’t always the favorite. If they could only just do a drive in theater hack and slash like episodes 2-4, then life would be great. But everyone is so fickle on what should happen, they want origin, they want realism, and no one cares about the roots. You want a F13 yet you think his roots are recycled garbage. Which is fine, the new reboot built upon new outlook, and the only thing that makes sense is to make a sequel to it, but then everyone hated 2009 for all the wrong reasons, when in the reality of story telling it was the absolute perfect jumping off point.

It was only in the 2009 reboot that we actually saw how Jason functioned at Crystal Lake, adding real life things to a supernatural slasher! It was revolutionary, and will be hard to match the realism while keeping the original spark in rebooting it again.

How do you duplicate something that has been rebooted multiple times, and their only answer that is of public knowledge is found footage. They can’t do space, they can’t do in the city, and they can’t do the perfect setup of 2009.

  • Saren Nevac

Didnt mind the new Jason in the reboot. What they do need is to set it in a new setting. Whether a snow covered area or even it spilling over into a village or small town. Would love if Tommy Jarvis came back to deal with Jason again. Anything thats better written than “Jason killing kids in wood”. What about adding lots of creative kills, tons of traps etc.

    • Adam Clifton

Not just Tommy Jarvis, but his sister Trish as well. I’d love to see their character dynamic since the events of part 4. And if they’re smart, they can include the deleted dream sequence from part 4 in the new one as a nightmare of Trish’s. Tommy finds out Jason could still be alive after the 2009 instalment and goes back to Crystal Lake while Trish believes her brother has gone off the deep end… like before

  • Flashjordan

I’m with most others when I say that I just want another F13 movie, i’m preety sure I’m with the majority when I say LEAVE THE FUCKING FOUND FOOTAGE GENRE BEHIND AND NEVER USE IT EVER AGAIN. I’ve made my peace with 3D just don’t make it a gimmicky as possible.

  • Francesco Falciani

    Adios November 13th 2015 release…

  • Jackieboy

Well, at least the tv series might be okay…

  • peter gildersleve

so they are rebooting the reboot

  • Scorpionsy

They better make this rebooted reboot worth it…the last reboot sucked for me. And please don’t make it a found-footage style movie…that will not work with this type of movie.

  • Sussex County Series

Ok so let me just out this out there. We are pitching a pilot series to Showtime, Netflix, and FX. This series is called “Sussex County”. If that name sounds familiar, it’s the town that gave birth to the slasher. The series centers around a more “humanized, but more sadistic Jason Voorhees. You not only see his upbringing but you see his character develop throughout. He actually isn’t a brainless killer. You see him develop into not only a physical but a physiological force. He’s also much more versatile, and ten times more brutal than ever before

    • SaltSlasher

I also like to write fan scripts for Jason, sort of writing stories around the legend. But I am hoping to finish off some stories in time to save Jason’s reboot, not that I think anyone would read them or if it can’t be saved. Rob Zombie gets it, he knows how to take little, and make a lot, most importantly he has style, all things Jason needs.

I am mostly for a solid TV series, because I am a firm believer that TV is the real place to tell stories and I want more Jason stories. Like Star Wars was awesome, no doubt, but Clone Wars was so much more than the 1-3 saga, they are both amazing because the other exists.

      • Sussex County Series

Ok so here’s the thing. I’ve actually got in contact with a producer and things are looking pretty good. This isn’t a reboot at all. It’s more or less an original story/different take on the whole story. It focuses on a town after all of the murders long ago. Jason has laid dormant for years and has now resurfaced. Of course I can’t give away to much about the plot but he has a specific reason for everything he does. He’s more humanized more brutal and has character development throughout the series. So you get to know him and why he is doing what he is doing. Follow our page man and I promise you won’t be disappointed. I promise you I get it just like rob zombie does. This is a completely different take but stays true to the original when it comes to looks and most of his mannerisms. But something’s needed to change. For instance. I hate the fact that he walks. I want him to run. I want him to kill with a purpose and vengeance in his heart. And you will get all of that with Sussex County. Also I wanted him to be a psycholigical terror as well. Not just some mindless killer. Our short will debut on Halloween night and we are actually shooting some scenes this wknd.

      • Sussex County Series

I would love to read some of your stories man.

  • Sussex County Series

Follow our Instagram fan page @Sussexcountyseries. The plot synopsis is ( a new to town, but depressed homicide detective Jordan Lucas finds himself in a vicious fight for his life as he stumbles upon an attempted police cover up claiming Jason has been dead for years. Now on the verge of Camp Crystal Lake re opening, barbaric murders are happening at an alarming rate. That are ironically similar to the ones years ago . How far will Jordan go to expose the fact that Jason is alive? How will he stop him? I promise we will not disappoint!!!

  • Spence33

I loved the 2009 remake. They better not opt for the found footage.

  • Anthony Moore

Im not sure about the found footage angle for this, but its obvious they need to try something new so, I dunno, we will see how this turns out. Can’t be any worse than the last reboot…

  • James Sharp

The Freddy and Jason reboots both sucked. Don’t even bother if all you can come up with is crap..
