[Interview] Joe Dante Talks ‘The Hole’, “Trailers From Hell” And The Future Of ‘Gremlins’!

Director Joe Dante‘s children’s horror tale, The Hole – which stars Chris Massoglia, Haley Bennett, Nathan Gamble, Bruce Dern and Teri Polo – opens in theaters tomorrow September 28 before arriving on Blu-ray and VOD October 2 from Big Air Studios. In fact, if you’re in LA the film has added another location at the Downtown Independent Theater (251 S. Main St. Los Angeles, CA 90012). Mr. Disgusting thoroughly enjoyed the film and I thought it was a lot of fun myself.

The film is, “a 3D thriller that explores the fears and secrets buried deep within the human mind. After moving into a new neighborhood, brothers Dane and Lucas, along with their neighbor Julie, discover a bottomless hole in the basement of their home. They find that once the hole is exposed, evil is unleashed. With strange shadows lurking around every corner and nightmares coming to life, they are forced to come face to face with their darkest fears to put an end to the mystery of THE HOLE.

I recently hopped on the phone with Dante and we talked at length about The Hole, his cool web project “Trailers From Hell” and a little bit about the future of Gremlins! Head inside to check it out. READ MORE

[Special Report] More From The Bulgaria Set Of ‘Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines’ And Part Two Of Our Interview With Director Declan O’Brien!

With Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines, director and writer Declan O’Brien (Wrong Turn 3: Left For Dead, Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings, Sharktopus) returns to helm of his third film in the franchise, with Doug Bradley (best known for his role of “Pinhead” in the Hellraiser films) in a pivotal role. Camilla Arfwedson, Roxanne McKee, Simon Ginty, Oliver Hoare, Amy Lennox, Duncan Wisbey, Kyle Redmond-Jones, Peter Brooke, Emilia Klayn, Rosie Holden and Andrew Bone round out the cast.

In the next chilling chapter of ‘Wrong Turn,’ a small West Virginia town is hosting the legendary Mountain Man Festival on Halloween, where throngs of costumed partygoers gather for a wild night of music and mischief. But an inbred family of hillbilly cannibals kill all the fun when they trick and treat themselves to a group of visiting college students who are dying for a good time.

Back in May, I visited the set in Sofia, Bulgaria and came back with some thoughts on the production – not to mention a bunch of pics! I’ve already written in with Part One of my visit (and a contest winner’s set report can be found here.) Now I’m ready to share my final thoughts and the second installment of my video interview with Declan O’Brien – if you’re a fan of the franchise you won’t want to miss it.

Interview: Anthony Del Col Talks The Future Of ‘Kill Shakespeare’

Kill Shakespeare came onto the scene in 2010 from IDW Publishing, and co-creators Anthony Del Col and Connor McCreery have not let up since. “Kill Shakespeare” is an epic fantasy literary mashup, bringing together characters from vast body Shakespeare’s plays. The plot follows Hamlet after banished from Denmark, on his quest to find and possibly kill the mysterious wizard known as Bill Shakespeare. The 12-issue series came to an end in 2011, however the series has since been adapted into a multifaceted stage play, with plans for a video game, and a feature film in the works.

The creative team relentlessly tours North American comic conventions, and recently, at Montreal Comiccon, Anthony Del Col took the time to talk about his experience writing “Kill Shakespeare” over the past few years. We chatted about everything from a potential new series, to the stage play, to “Before Watchmen” and creator rights. Check it below. READ MORE

Guillermo Del Toro Talks ‘Pacific Rim’ And ‘Hellboy 3′

We all know Guillermo Del Toro is an insanely busy guy. When I caught up with him last night on the red carpet for the Eyegore Awards (which kicked off this year’s Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood), it was no exception. He was being hounded by everybody. But I did get a few tidbits on the upcoming Pacific Rim and a small update on Hellboy 3

Regarding Pacific Rim, he said that despite the big-budget he’s had an extraordinary amount of freedom. “It’s gonna be great! I’m 48 years old and this is the best experience I’ve ever had making a movie! In spite of my age I feel like a 12 year old when I go to the sets. It’s going to be a fun, fun, fun experience.

And Hellboy 3. The eternal question. “We’re trying! We try and we try and we try. It’s an expensive proposition and it’s not easy!” Yeesh! Given that Del Toro has an insanely full dance card and the uphill battle that Hellboy 3 seems to be, I’d say it’s possible but not likely to happen anytime soon. Maybe after Pacific Rim (if it goes bonkers at the box office and Del Toro can find a spare year to work on it).

This year’s Halloween Horror Nights dates are September 21, 22, 28, 29 and October 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 18, 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 27, 28 and 31.

Bill Moseley Talks Returning To The Saw In ‘Texas Chainsaw 3D’, Chiller TV’s “Dead Souls”

I nabbed Bill Moseley (The Devil’s Rejects, Rob Zombie’s Halloween) last night on the red carpet for the Eyegore Awards (which kicked off this year’s Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood). And he was definitwly game to discuss Lionsgate’s newly titled Texas Chainsaw 3D. It goes without saying that he’s not reprising his role as “Chop-Top” from TCM2. And turns out there’s a reason we don’t see much of him in the trailer.

I didn’t see much of you in that trailer, I assume they’re saving you for later. “Correct! I play Drayton Sawyer, who was played by Jim Siedow in the very first film in 1974. I play him imperfectly, I might add. But with love and enthusiasm.” Anything else coming up? “I’ve got Dead Souls coming up for Chiller TV. It’s based in the book by Michael Laimo and is directed by Colin Theys.

Texas Chainsaw 3D is in theaters January 4, 2013. Dead Souls premieres on Chiller TV Friday, October 12th at 9PM ET.

This year’s Halloween Horror Nights dates are September 21, 22, 28, 29 and October 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 18, 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 27, 28 and 31.

Adelaide Clemens Talks Playing Heather Mason In ‘Silent Hill: Revelations 3D’

I caught up with Adelaide Clemens (Wolverine, The Great Gatsby) last night on the red carpet for the Eyegore Awards (which kicked off this year’s Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood) and we were able to chat a bit about her role in the upcoming Silent Hill: Revelation 3D.

It was a huge privilege to take on the role of Heather Mason and to be in that world. There are so many scares involved it’s extraordinary and the aesthetic of the game is a big part of the world but we take the plot and put a twist on it’s head so…” Is she signed on for Part 3? “I would love to be a part of it, but there haven’t been any discussions as of yet.

Kit Harington, Sean Bean, Radha Mitchell, Deborah Kara Unger, Carrie-Anne Moss, Malcolm McDowell also star in the Michael J. Bassett directed sequel that’s based on the acclaimed survival horror video game. Open Road will release in Silent Hill: Revelation 3D in theaters on October 26th.

This year’s Halloween Horror Nights dates are September 21, 22, 28, 29 and October 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 18, 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 27, 28 and 31.

Chad Michael Murray Talks ‘The Haunting In Georgia’

I caught up with actor Chad Michael Murray (“One Tree Hill”, House Of Wax) last night on the red carpet for the Eyegore Awards (which kicked off this year’s Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood). And he was briefly able to fill us in a bit on his role in the upcoming The Haunting In Georgia, the followup to The Haunting In Connecticut.

I can’t tell you when it comes out, but I can tell you that you’ll dig it! I play a souther prison guard whose wife and daughter are supposedly schizophrenic. It’s the second in the trilogy – you’ve got Connecticut, Georgia and New York. The first one was really great and we hope to follow up that success nicely in Georgia.” Not much… but we’ll keep you posted on that release date.

I caught up with producer Jason Miller (Frozen, Hatchet 2, Chillerama) last night on the red carpet for the Eyegore Awards (which kicked off this year’s Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood) and he filled us in on his new project.

So you have a found footage project coming up? “I do… I haven’t announced it yet but I guess I can give you the exclusive [laughs]. We’re still negotiating with a distributor but we’ve shot half of it on our own and now we’re just wrapping it up.” And this is you behind the camera right? “Yes. Writing and directing.

Miller directed last year’s short Infected which starred Alexis Peters, BD alum Brian Collins, David Foy and A.J. Bowen. He also served as second unit director on Hatchet 2 and Frozen so he’s definitely been working on his chops. I’m definitely interested to see where this goes.

Darren Lynn Bousman Talks ‘The Devil’s Carnival 2′, Taking A Break And ‘Abattoir’

I caught up with Darren Bousman last night on the red carpet for the Eyegore Awards (which kicked off this year’s Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood). He’s had a busy year what with The Devil’s Carnival, Mother’s Day and the upcominng release of The Barrens. So he’s probably taking a little break pretty soon – but not until after The Devil’s Carnival 2.

He told us, “We’re starting pre-production right now. It takes place in Heaven and it’s a lot more dark and f*cked up than the first one that takes place in Hell. So Heaven is a lot darker than Hell in our case. Everyone [from the original] is back and we have a whole new cast of misfits as well.

Is he keeping up the breakneck pace after that? “No. I’m taking a break. I’m ready to die.” After the break? “The only thing I can talk about is Abattoir. I had a comic book series called ‘Abattoir’ and I’m writing the script [for the film] right now. That’s in the very early stages of pre-production. That would probably be my next movie.

Catfish duo Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman are back for Paranormal Activity 4 after directing Paranormal Activity 3. And we know someone else we’re betting is back too. Katie Featherston.

I caught up with her last night on the red carpet for the Eyegore Awards (which kicked off this year’s Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood) and pressed her about her potential appearance in the film. “I know! I hear it on the internet, so of course it’s true! I actually don’t know one way or the other but I know that they’re working busily to put [the film] together and that everyone seems super excited. I keep up with Oren Peli and Jason Blum all the time. Fingers crossed I get the hookup before it comes out!

Were told that the sequel will explore the family of witches we saw in PA3 (who live next door to a newly introduced family) in this fourth film from creator/producer Oren Peli. Interview: Christy Marx Talks Princesses And Blood Power In ‘ Sword Of Sorcery’

This week, DC Comics released the #0 issue of Christy Marx’ Sword of Sorcery reboot. You may know Marx better for her scriptwork in cartooning over the past thirty years on shows like Jem And The Holograms, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Spider-Man, and plenty more. On top of that, Marx has worked extensively with Marvel Comics in the past on “Conan” and “Red Sonja”. “Sword of Sorcery” marks her return to the medium to deliver yet another kick-ass female heroine.

Marx is working to reboot the original 12-issue run on “Amethyst, Princess Of Gemworld” from the 80s, a character who seemingly vanished from the DCU. From the #0 issue, it is already clear that Marx is taking liberties with the series in order to revitalize it for a modern audience. The new series follows a 17-year-old Amy who discovers that she can harness extraordinary powers as the Princess of Gem World. Marx notes that her rendition delves deeper into Amy’s personal issues as she finds herself in an epic battle for the House Amethyst.

We caught up with Marx to chat about her rejuvenation of “Sword of Sorcery”, women in comics, blood powers, and much more. READ MORE

Myself and a few other journalists sat down with Tonderai a few days ago and spoke to him at length about the film, how he came to cast Lawrence and Thieriot and the intensive “bible” he created for the film. We also talked about his love of Hitchock, which is evident when you see the film.

In the film, “Seeking a fresh start, newly divorced Sarah (Elisabeth Shue) and her daughter Elissa (Jennifer Lawrence) find the house of their dreams in a small, upscale, rural town. But when startling and unexplainable events begin to happen, Sarah and Elissa learn the town is in the shadows of a chilling secret. Years earlier, in the house next door, a daughter killed her parents in their beds, and disappeared – leaving only a brother, Ryan (Max Thieriot), as the sole survivor. [TIFF '12 Interview] ‘The Lords Of Salem’ Stars Sheri Moon Zombie & Jeff Daniel Phillips

Whether it’s cast or crew, Writer/Director Rob Zombie loves to stick to a core group. Like Quentin Tarantino, he enjoys casting some long forgotten talent from the genre titles he grew up on and admired. Zombie cleverly goes against our expectations and previous experiences with a certain actor and uses him or her in a refreshingly unexpected way. His wife and muse, Sheri Moon Zombie is the one constant in every picture he has made. Her involvement in his work has always caused a stir among genre fans. This doesn’t seem to faze Zombie a bit since Sheri is lead in his latest, The Lords of Salem.

She plays local DJ Heidi Hawthorne. Along with her co-hosts Herman Whitey Salvador (Jeff Daniel Phillips) and Herman Jackson (Ken Foree), they play a mysterious vinyl on air by a band called The Lords which will soon put the town and its inhabitants on a collision course with its disturbing past.

Mr. Disgusting thoroughly enjoyed the film and I thought it was a lot of fun myself. I recently hopped on the phone with Dante and we talked at length about The Hole, his cool web project “Trailers From Hell” and some of his upcoming features. In short – something will obviously happen at some point, just don’t expect it to be too soon.

[TIFF '12 Interview] ‘No One Lives’ Director Ryuhei Kitamura

When the WWE Films logo appears before a film, I keep my expectations in check. While I’ll admit that the Kane vehicle, See No Evil is in my guilty pleasure list, the majority I’ve seen are straight-to-video fare at its laziest. Like most DTV, they’re an attempt to cash in on whatever the fad may be at the moment and hope that fans looking for a quick fix won’t mind. From the offset, No One Lives (review) comes across as just that. The attempt at “clever” dialogue is consistently laughable but once the film is suddenly steered in a different direction at the end of the first act, my attention was grabbed. For the remainder of its duration, No One Lives is a creatively violent, trashy ride in the way the Friday the 13th movies are. If you watch it for what it is, fun will be had.

The skillful directing of Ryuhei Kitamura (Midnight Meat Train, Versus) is the main reason why I ignored the film’s obvious issues. I had the pleasure of chatting with him at TIFF ’12, where the film was getting its premiere. I asked him what drew him to the script. “I started reading it. First I felt; oh okay, No One Lives, everybody dies. Girl running in the woods, a couple of gangsters, okay another torture porn kind of movie which I love to watch but didn’t want to do myself. Then there’s a twist and turn in the script and I simply felt: wow this is a non-stop ride and it’s a fun popcorn project which was very different from the movie I did, Midnight Meat Train. That was much more twisted and a philosophical. So this was to me a fun, straightforward genre movie almost like the movies from the 80’s.READ MORE

MTV Shutting Down Headbangers Ball Again

In a video interview with Horns Up Rock, Headbangers Ball host Jose Mangin announced that it looks like MTV2 will be canceling their show Headbangers Ball. The question and answer come around the 7:00 minute mark in the below video.

Mangin says about MTV, “They do a lot of hip hop, and they support that music fully. They used to support rock.

It’s actually a very true statement. The 80′s and 90′s had a ton of rock artists that got a lot of support from the mainstream. Then, as hip hop became more and more popular and took over the airwaves, support for rock and metal fell entirely to the wayside. And even though I didn’t watch much Headbangers Ball, it was comforting knowing that it was there, supporting a style of music that, while once being the king of the industry, ended up as the shunned outcast.

Ah well, such is life. I’m gonna go blast some Pantera now to brighten my day. READ MORE
