Ray Manzarek, Founding Member of The Doors, Passes Away at 74

Ray Manzarek, keyboardist and founding member of The Doors, passed away today at 12:31PM PT at the RoMed Clinic in Rosenheim, Germany after a lengthy battle with bile duct cancer. He was 74. At the time of his passing, he was surrounded by his wife Dorothy Manzarek, and his brothers Rick and James Manczarek.

Manzarek is best known for his work with The Doors who formed in 1965 when Manzarek had a chance encounter on Venice Beach with poet Jim Morrison. The Doors went on to become one of the most controversial rock acts of the 1960s, selling more than 100-million albums worldwide, and receiving 19 Gold, 14 Platinum and five multi-Platinum albums in the U.S. alone. "L.A.Woman," "Break On Through to the Other Side," "The End," "Hello, I Love You," and "Light My Fire" were just some of the band's iconic and ground-breaking songs. After Morrison's death in 1971, Manzarek went on to become a best-selling author, and a Grammy-nominated recording artist in his own right. In 2002, he revitalized his touring career with Doors' guitarist and long-time collaborator, Robby Krieger.

"I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of my friend and bandmate Ray Manzarek today," said Krieger. "I'm just glad to have been able to have played Doors songs with him for the last decade. Ray was a huge part of my life and I will always miss him."

Manzarek is survived by his wife Dorothy, brothers Rick and James Manczarek, son Pablo Manzarek, Pablo's wife Sharmin and their three children Noah, Apollo and Camille. Funeral arrangements are pending. The family asks that their privacy be respected at this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, please make a memoriam donation in Ray Manzarek's name at www.standup2cancer.org

Needles to say I'm interested in anything PT Anderson does, and throw in Joaquin Phoenix as the lead, yet again, and this becomes my most anticipated flick of 2014.

It's an adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's 2009 novel about a drug-fueled, LA PI (Phoenix) who investigates the disappearance of an ex-girlfriend (on the surface, of course) and according to Amazon is 'part noir, part psychedelic romp, all Thomas Pynchon - private eye Doc Sportello surfaces, occasionally, out of a marijuana haze to watch the end of an era.'

I'm a third of the way through reading it, and so far it's been enteraining as hell. It's very funny and is becoming a somewhat complex mystery, with it's plot twists and number of whacked-out, weirdo characters, that paints and incredibly vivid picture of a recently post-Manson, late 60's Los Angeles.

It seems like somewhat new territory for Anderson, yet familiar as it's set in and influenced by an end of an era/decade that's fueled by sex and drugs, much the same way Boogie Nights was.

So far the kick-ass cast includes, Pheonix, Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson, Benecio Del Toro, Martin Short, Jenna Malone... Oh, and it's rumoured that some hack named Sean Penn is currently in talks to
join.

Can't wait!

Not necessarily looking for the best American horror movies from the first decade of the 21st century, just the most influential. The ones that, as you see them, were so uniquely resonant with audiences that they seem to testify to distinctly American fears or anxieties.

Working on a critical essay that follows a couple of themes that run through the J-horror trend in American horror movies of the early part of the decade, to the semi-resurgence of Splatter with the Hostel and Saw series, the resurgence of demonic possession/exorcism stuff, found footage with Paranormal -- and I know that a lot of these things were heavily influenced (if not ripped off) from foreign films, but I'm trying to figure out why they were so poignant with American audiences.

Thanks for your input!

Golden Lion winner Faust was praised by US director Darren Aronofsky - head of the Venice jury - who presented the award.

He said: "There are some films that make you cry, there are some films that make you laugh, there are some films that change you forever after you see them; and this is one of them."

I heard that Aronofsky cried whilst watching it and his quote has got me really interested in seeing it. The trailer has no English subtitles but the visuals and music alone make it look like a film well worth seeing.

Has anyone actually seen this? I only came across it by accident and I'm quite interested.

The plot is about the German legend in which a man sells his soul to the devil in exchange for knowledge.
