I know that, but did you read his prologue to the book? He said it was intended as a novelization of the film, but when he read the script he realized there wasn't enough of a story to warrant a book version so he changed a lot of it.

Actually, Koontz based his adaptation on the available screenplay. The book was a strong seller upon it's initial release, months before the movie debuted in theaters. When Koontz finally saw Hooper's finished effort, he considered it a missed opportunity. After the film's poor reception, the book sales plummeted.
