  • What Ever Happened To Baby Jane? (1962)

Does anyone else out there love this film?

I hadn't seen it in years and just recently purchased a copy on DVD and loved it even more than I did back then. After 43 years it still holds up well.

Bette Davis and Joan Crawford were perfection in their roles and weren't afraid to look ghastly to make the film work. Bette Davis' performance is so over the top yet so appropriate for the film. Joan Crawford manages to do a lot with little, considering she spends most of the film in a wheelchair and confined to her room.

I love the dialogue and interaction between Bette Davis and Joan Crawford too - they pretty much carry the entire film and the chemisty between them is amazing. Whether it's true or not, their reputed hatred of each other while making the film is legendary - if it is true, then it would certainly explain why they were both so convincing in their roles - lol!!

I hope this film NEVER gets remade - I couldn't even begin to imagine anyone who could possibly fill the roles of these two women.

    Superb!

You're absolutely right Freaq, this is a true classic.

I remember watching it as a child, and even at such a young age being totally mesmerised by it.

It's been far too long since I've watched it, I'm patiently waiting for the region 2 special edition in June next year.

A special edition? Damn! Mine is pretty much bare bones aside from some VERY lightweight and brief "production notes". And it comes in one of those crappy cardboard covers!

      Bah!

I agree, great movie. I saw this movie as a child, too, and that ad with the doll & the cracked head scared the chit out of me even before I saw the movie.

Yep. If you can play region 2 here's the link. To be honest though it isn't exactly brimming with special features, I'm more hoping that they've done a good transfer, cleaned it up a bit.

Love it. Great, great, great film. It's one of the best "haunted" house films out there. Great acting, that's what stands out the most, the two leads (Bette Davis and Joan Crawford) are amazing. The story is compelling from beginning to end, lots of subtext, and a lot to think about after it ends. It's shot beautifully, you can really notice on the DVD, a really nice transfer on the Region 1. On top of it all, it's just so devilishly entertaining to watch. I have always said this film should be as highly regarded as Psycho, in that same vein for sure. If you haven't seen it, go check it out.

Fantastic movie. Horror has many dimentions. I think there was a remake on TV. with Lynn Rengrave. I did not watch it (nor care to).

                          Yes,
there was a remake done for TV in the 90s with Lynn and Vanessa Redgrave playing the sisters. I don't remember it being bad, just unneccesary. The original film is great though. And how creepy is the scene of Bette Davis singing "I've written a letter to Daddy" I believe is the name of the song. At least that is one of the lyrics.
I feel like the baroness in "The Sound of Music". Everyone is off climbing an Alp and I want to shove a guitar up that nun's ass.

I reckon you should do it! Such an excellent combo to put in a double feature!

You should also check out Hush Hush...Sweet Charlotte - another excellent film from the same director as Baby Jane and another excellent performance from Bette Davis. Very twisted for it's time...

I love Bette Davis! She was also in (I believe it was a Hammer film) called The Nanny, also worth checking out.
