Saw this last week, and I have to say, what I liked best is how a lot of the parts from the original were included in this. They were redone in ways sometimes cool, sometimes slightly mediocre, but I was able to appreciate all the little eye winks. Man, even the car made a cameo appearance. That was awesome.
But as many have said, I don't otherwise think it was anything special. Too much elaborating on the plot and trying to make it all moody, ho hum gore and violence, plus the book of the dead/damned didn't look as cool as it did in the original. Eh I have minor complaints, this movie worked out quite fine, I liked it. If the series wants to head in that direction from now on I'm cool with it. Certainly, it could have been worse.
I do believe that the original was a fluke though. I mean I don't think it was actually meant to be all that funny. (some famous critic dude criticized the remake for not being funny) Therefore, I find this new remake/reboot/whatever to be commendable. One of my major complaints is that it borrows too much from what we've seen in horror countless times, so I thought that was a bit of a turn off, for a remake that's essentially honoring something that was pretty out there at the time. Still, it was a fun movie, and to me that's pretty much all that's important lol.
It's not poopoo, but when compared to the other horror flicks we've been getting as of late it's ok.
I don't think it should be rated any higher than a 6/10 though.
Agreed. It was very slightly above average and fun movie, but the hype surrounding it is baffling. Infact, the more I think about it, the less favorable my opinion becomes. If a shitload of gore (which isn't even that amazing considering how much people talked it up) is enough to seal this as a great horror movie, then why are there so many detractors of something such as the Saw franchise or whatever, because I'm pretty sure both provide that exact same cathartic violence element and not much of anything else. I think my biggest problem with the movie is that it just isn't scary. They played it straight and sold it to be terrifying, and it wasn't one iota.
