I never once claimed the original Evil Dead movie had good acting, everybody else seems to be implying that's what I meant though.

All I'm saying is that the original movie worked because all of the elements worked together to make a coherent (although silly, over-the-top, and super fun) film experience. I'm not sure that this remake will be able to keep that same type of togetherness that makes classic movies classic.

Based on the trailer, the acting seems to suck ass (and seems tongue-in-cheek to me) and yet the visuals imply a disturbing, dark, and terrifying experience. I can't take thematically dark material seriously if a bunch of terrible actors are spewing terrible dialogue. It just doesn't work.

Honestly, this is WAY WAY WAY too much discussion for the short red-band that has been released. It looks decent, but I'm not getting my hopes up. There are many other films being released that I have much more interest in seeing. For now I'll stick to the original and if this movie turns out great, awesome. For now I'll remain skeptical.

    • I thought the trailer looked great. Personally, i can't wait to see this movie. I'll probably do two viewings the day it comes out.

these are good points. i think part of the charm of the first evil dead is that one appreciates what a labor of love and ingenuity it is, and that really helps make it work.

i agree with your point about dark themes as well. if it really is dark, the performances and the material do need to be believable to make it work. i have hopes that it will.

It should be said that since none of us have seen this remake, it is impossible to say what they are going for. It appears to be over-the-top, bloody, and dark. If they are going for a more light hearted approach, it isn't in the trailer at all.

This could be good, and I'm already pumped to show some friends this trailer as they will undoubtedly be completely psyched about this.

          • It kind of reminds me of all the torture porn shit that is so hot right now. It really does not to separate its self from all the shit that has washed up in movie theaters recently, honestly it looks like everything else.

              • Just saw the Red-Band and holy crap, I have to see this. It could be terrible, but based on this trailer I'm sold. They're definitely going balls-to-the-wall, and if you're doing Evil Dead 1 that's the way you got to go.

But to bemoan a trailer( not the completed film mind you) over it's dialog when it's going to be nothing more than a "dead teenager" movie is a tad ridiculous right?

This isn't Shakespeare, it's a remake of a low budget gore flick from 1981 that had horrendous dialog and acting also....

Don't play that "It's just a horror movie" card, like the fundamentals of good filmmaking should just be ignored. You may as well just say "I like every movie ever made, because they're movies".

Ok I won't play that card if you promise not to put this on some special pedestal that it will never have the hopes of reaching.

It's a slasher movie plain and simple, if I want outstanding dialog I'll go and see The Master again...

Haters don't understand logic. They only understand hate.

I think this looks like a lot of fun. Some of the complaints are just plain retarded.

It looks no different than every other shitty remake hollywood has churned out as of late.

Being skeptical =/= being a hater. I am excited for this, especially since the trailer doesn't blow. I'm afraid its going to play out like a few recent remakes, where the unbelievably idiotic characters and morbidly/boarder-line offensive dialogue ruined the movie. Not to mention they ruin the mythology that made the original awesome in the first place (Nightmare on Elm Street... the Fog... Prom Night. You know you're guilty, fools).

I would say it's acceptable to complain about the acting and dialogue not being so great in the trailer (especially since Diablo Cody is involved). However, I haven't seen the movie, so maybe it isn't so bad. Even if it is bad, maybe its underplayed enough so that I don't care or maybe I hate the characters so much I want to see them ripped to shreds. Just based on the trailer, I'm far more excited for the carnage than I am for everything else in this remake. Sometimes that's enough...... sometimes.

Also, as a side note.... did anybody notice a woman-shaped body jumping out of a puddle of water in the woods? Evil Ash-esque character going to make an appearance????

                        • Here are a few things a noticed in the RB trailer:

-- One of the characters looks like Ash and, in one scene, uses the chainsaw a la Ash in ED2.

-- In one scene, it appears that blood rains from the sky.

-- The POV charging evil shot is very smooth.

-- A greater emphasis seems to have been placed on the exterior of the cabin, i.e. the forest, a pond/swamp, mud crawling, raining blood, etc.

-- There are a nice variety of camera angles and ranges.

-- There seems to be few handheld shots.

-- The possessed don't seem to have any vocal inflection.

-- One of the characters tries to burn one of the possessed.

-- It seems to have elements of both ED1 and ED2.

-- Many of the scenes have an eerie whitish tinge that's neither hypercontrast nor fog machine; this is rarely used in non-dream movie sequences.

Overall, great f'n trailer; the best since that of The Woman in Black.

                          • I've learnt not to get excited by trailers, especially when it comes to horror remakes. Elm St had a great trailer, F13 had a great trailer. See where I'm going here ?

Yes it looks good and pretty bloody but I'm going to wait until I see the final film before I start jumping up and down.
