I Am Legend by Richard Matheson.

Wow. I loved that story. It was way better than the movie, but you can't compare the two. If you just watch the movie, it is still a great film, but the story in the book is a lot more psychological and I love that.

Fantastic story that has only ever been very loosely adapted to the screen, and usually quite poorly at that.

I have several, as I find novellas to be the most suitable literary medium for horror. Someone mentioned The Outsider by Mr. L-craft, which is a short story that really does the best of the medium, I find.

...but The Red Tower and Gas Station Carnivals by Thomas Ligotti are two of my absolute favourites.
