Welcome to a new world of gods and monsters.

This year’s The Mummy is going to be an interesting film for several reasons. For starters, it will officially launch Universal’s shared monsters universe, so it should give us a pretty good idea of the direction the studio is headed in with that new universe. From what we’ve seen so far, it looks like they’re taking an action-horror approach, which has bummed many horror fans out.

But let’s not rush to judgement just yet.

On tap today is the second official trailer for The Mummy, and we’re digging how much more of a horror vibe is in this than the previous one. Granted, it still looks like a Tom Cruise action flick above all else, but it’s a Tom Cruise action flick that’s undoubtedly going to be loaded with horror elements. Cruise is swarmed by rats in one scene; in another, he comes face to face with underwater skeleton monsters. And then come the spiders, which are sure to give our own Brad Miska nightmares for weeks. He hates spiders. I’m not even going to warn him.

One thing is for certain: Universal is going BIG with the new universe. Count me in.

Tom Cruise is joined in the Universal reboot by a cast including Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Star Trek Beyond), Annabelle Wallis (Annabelle, King Arthur, Peaky Blinders), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Russell Crowe and Courtney B. Vance (TV’s “American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson”).

Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.

From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

The creative team is led by director/producer Alex Kurtzman and producer Chris Morgan, who have been instrumental in growing some of the most successful franchises of the past several years—with Kurtzman writing or producing entries in the Transformers, Star Trek and Mission: Impossible series, and Morgan being the narrative engineer of the Fast & Furious saga as it has experienced explosive growth from its third chapter on. Sean Daniel, who produced the most recent Mummy trilogy, produces alongside Kurtzman and Morgan.
