    • The Desolation of Smaug received 3 Oscar(visual effects, sound editing, sound mixing) nominations today. The same amount as An Unexpected Journey. This 2nd part should have also received nominations for cinematography, art direction, and makeup.

      • Gotta say these Hobbit films are not doing too well with awards recognition. 2 years in a row they have honored the films with 3 nominations each. Desolation Of Smaug should have had 2 or 3 more noms for a total of 5 or 6.

        • Once again(like the 1st part) this 2nd part has received no big award wins. Thought it would have won Makeup or Production Design at the BAFTA"s today....but nope. Bugger all!! I have a feeling The Hobbit will end up like the Harry Potter franchise....numerous Oscar noms...but no wins!! I hope I am wrong though....

            • "The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug".....This second chapter is packed with fast paced moments full of exciting adventure and action. The cast is wonderful with Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, and Martin Freeman leading the way. There are so many scenes that I love, involving both the elves and the dragon Smaug. The special effects are wonderful all throughout the film. The art direction, directing, sound, music, and cinematography are all terrific too!! The characters of "Bard" and the "skin changer" are interesting and cool additions to the story. Nominated for only 3 (Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Visual Effects) Oscars; the movie deserved alot more nominations.

              10/10

                • Straight from Peter Jack on Facebook this morning.

                  Inside Information...

Our journey to make The Hobbit Trilogy has been in some ways like Bilbo's own, with hidden paths revealing their secrets to us as we've gone along. “There and Back Again” felt like the right name for the second of a two film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo’s arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film. But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced—after all, Bilbo has already arrived “there” in the "Desolation of Smaug".

When we did the premiere trip late last year, I had a quiet conversation with the studio about the idea of revisiting the title. We decided to keep an open mind until a cut of the film was ready to look at. We reached that point last week, and after viewing the movie, we all agreed there is now one title that feels completely appropriate.

And so: "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" it is.

As Professor Tolkien intended, “There and Back Again” encompasses Bilbo’s entire adventure, so don’t be surprised if you see it used on a future box-set of all three movies.

Before then however, we have a film to finish, and much to share with you. It’s been a nice quiet time for us—Jabez and I happily editing away in a dark cave in Wellington—but those halcyon days are quickly coming to an end. It will soon be time to step into the light. Expect to see and hear much about The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies in the coming months.

And there’s also The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Extended Cut, which we’re in the process of finishing, with over 25 mins of new scenes, all scored with original music composed by Howard Shore.

                  It’ll be a fun year!

so... looks like he's changing the title of the final film to "The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies"

Interesting news... neither here nor there I suppose. I get his reasoning.

... and the Desolation of Smaug's extended cut will be 25 minutes longer! Awesome!

...and it is way more "catchy" (or selling) as There And Back Again. I am cool with it.

Truest thing you've said in weeks.

                          Title is wack.

Put "2 Fast 2 Furious" in B&W and Se7en thinks he's watching a Bergman film.
I find the Metal Gear Solid series to be mediocre at best.

                          • It's been getting a lot of hate on Facebook too.

Fucking terrible. Plus, the original one really had a nice feel to it, and ties it in with the first film.

Idiots. I don't see how it'll get any more money from it, the money made is from the words 'The Hobbit' and 'Peter Jackson'.

                            Idiots. Idiots everywhere.

There and Back Again sounds so much cooler. Battle of Five Armies (Not even Battle of THE Five Armies ) just sounds so lame.

You're right about Peter Jackson and The Hobbit name being the reason people go to the films. You could call it The Hobbit 3 and the movie would make the same amount of money it would have in the first place.
