Is it just me or is Hotel the worst season to date? Im only watching it at this point to see if it will get any better. The vampire thing could have been completely left out. Its beyond ridiculous.
Still early, but I think Coven takes that one.
I was ready to write this season off after the first episode, but I stuck with it and I'm actually enjoying it more than Freakshow so far. The Devil Night episode was awesome. Ramirez, Dahmer, The Zodiac killer and Gacy all having dinner together?! Pretty great. Couldn't help but think that Bundy deserved a seat at the table a bit more than Wuornos, though.
I've seen all the seasons (apart from Freakshow) and have enjoyed them all, even if Coven did totally lose the plot towards the second half, but I had to give up on Hotel after episode 3. It's a complete mess with so many threads going everywhere and nowhere. It's greatly suffering from the lack of Miss Lange.
Enjoying this season way more than Coven or Freak Show. The absence of some of the regular players like Lange and Emma Roberts is actually working in its favor as far as I'm concerned. It feels fresher. Although some of the problems persist. I actually found the Devil's Night episode to be excruciatingly bad, so much so that I was so close to turning it off and only continued because there was 10 or so minutes left. The episode pretty much summed up my biggest problem with Ryan Murphy, which is that there is no limit or control to his self-indulgence. Only someone with an ego as big as his own would think he could get away with the ghosts of a bunch of real-life serial killers visiting the fictional hotel to have dinner and recreate their grizzly methods of murder for some sort of playful entertainment. Maybe it's just me, but I found the whole thing to be extremely in poor taste. And Lily Rabe's performance as Aileen Wuornos? To say I was cringing would be the understatement of the century.
That being said, there are some really great elements. Loving Sarah Paulson, Denis O'Hare, the soundtrack is killer this season, and some of the set pieces like the vampire kids turning the school into a bloodbath and the homage to Pam Grier's career with the Angela Bassett character were particularly memorable. Hell, I'm not even impartial to Gaga. To say it is her first big role to date, she isn't doing too bad.
Hotel so far is far more enjoyable than Coven and even Freak Show. I don't get the crazy hate towards it, I mean it's not perfect but it really took some chances especially when the Halloween episode having all the crazy historic serial killers meeting for dinner I look forward to the show every week.
