Yeah she did, it's become one of my favorite films too. I put it right beside Requiem as Aronofsky's best.

No harm in that, only i wish they would have picked something much more contemporary feeling and boundary pushing, such as Inception and Black Swan (which at least were nominated).
Agreed, it's a damn good film and Firth really did an amazing job. But I also wish Black Swan was the winner.

Have you seen Zero Dark Thirty yet? Until I saw this, I thought Argo would be the big contender, now I'm not so sure.

I'm dying to see it. I'm still betting on Lincoln or Argo over Zero Dark Thirty... although they loved the Hurt Locker.

I think Chastain will win best actress based off of precursor awards. Do you think she deserves it? I think she's a great actress who came out of fucking nowhere.

Chastain is netting alot of small critic group wins, and the major critic groups(5 groups) that have announced so far have been spreading the wealth. Like we discussed last night, all acting categories have 2-3 frontrunners at the moment. I have read Naomi Watts is campaigning like crazy, and many people on different message boards are predicting an upset Best Actress win with her. Chastain has good momentum right now, but Jennifer Lawrence is right behind her and Watts is in there too. Chastain did come out of nowhere in 2010, and she already netted her 1st oscar nom last year. She was also the critics darling with many critic award groups.

My main category that I am looking so forward too is Best Actress. With Lawrence, Chastain, and Watts as potential nominees this month..all 3 women will be on their 2nd nomination, and we all know the Academy loves to honor people the 2nd time around most of the time.

          Agreed.

Ain't that the truth. Sometimes the Oscars get confused and actually give the awards to the deserving.

It was also very nice seeing Baker get one for his Wolf-Man. I'm sure he was so touched by it, as Jack Pierce is the reason he even got into the art.

SAG and BAFTA are the 2 main awards groups to rely on to make Oscar predictions. Not 100% all the time, but they are pretty damn close alot of the time. The Oscars have a huge British voters group with them, so BAFTA winners play HEAVILY in the Oscar race. And of course with SAG, we have the actors voting on eachother.

The screener is out and it's a fantastic film, better than The Hurt Locker IMO. Yeah, she killed it and it's one of the best performances from an actress this year, easy. And, yeah she's been in everything lately, I feel like I saw her in Tree of Life and then she just pops everywhere. Great actress though, so I'm happy to see her get a lot of good roles. That new one called Mama looks interesting.

Nice. It's long, but it's paced nicely, everything that goes on is interesting and it all makes the mission at the end all the more satisfying. Enjoy.

Can concur with that, though I watch the Oscars just for the sake of entertainment and voyerism only. Like Doxley said, sometimes even The Academy has decisive moments.

The Golden Globes are much more accurate, when it comes down to appreciate properly the achievement of the nominated.

What about the quality? Is it watchable?

Not a fan of the awards at all. Sometimes I agree with their decisions, but most of the time I don't.

The race to best supporting actor is going to be.. something. There were so many performances I can think up on one hand that are all deserving of the award. Tommy Lee will most likely win for Lincoln no matter who else is nominated. I just have that feeling. It's still going to be extremely close for many. Especially if the same noms from the Globes carry over.

Yep...I agree. I also think every acting category race is very close too.

I watched Zero Dark Thirty last night.

I'm going to watch it again in about 30 minutes and I'll report back with my thoughts.

After the first viewing I can safely say this is easily one of the best movies of the year.

Is it structured a bit more traditionally than The Hurt Locker? THL wasn't so much of a story, as it was a snapshot of a modern soldiers life. I didn't much care for it.

I can compare this to Zodiac in that its one giant, intricate manhunt. Obviously I'm not saying ZDT is like Zodiac in most of its elements, but its an exciting mystery capped with one of the most intense war/combat scenes I've ever seen.

Definitely a more focused film than The Hurt Locker, but just as expansive as other big, mystery-driven films. It takes place over the corse of a decade. Acting is just. fucking. amazing. Really emotional as well. I love it. I'll write more about it after I watch it again.
