  • Samurai Film Appreciation

Recently i've become increasingly interested in, and enamored by old japanese Chambara (sword fight) and Jidaigeki (period drama) style films. With my growing fondness comes the need to find more and more of these great works, just to substantiate my new found addiction.. Obviously, there's no shortage of material out there. But of course as is always the case, some are better than others.

Point being, name some of your favourites of the genre.. Aswell as and most importantly, some of the more obscure and or rarely mentioned titles that often go overlooked.

Yojimbo and Seven Samurai are my favorite samurai flicks. Can't go wrong with Kurosawa.

Seven Samurai and Samurai Rebellion are my favourites. Others I enjoyed:

            Yojimbo
            Sanjuro
            Ugestu
            Sword of Doom
            Samurai Assasin
            Throne of Blood
            The Samurai Trilogy

Basically any samurai flick with the great Toshiro Mifune.

What did you think of the Satan's Sword Trilogy?

I've been really wanting to check these out along with the Ninja, a Band of Assassins and Sleepy Eyes of Death series, the bitch of it being the imports are pricey as hell (around 40$ a piece).. and of course no US or UK releasings. Might just say fuck it and go with some boots as I did with Tenchu and Tengu-to.

I dug 'em...they're definitely nowhere near the quality of Sword of Doom, but they hold their own, and are worth seeing so you get the entire story. You can get decent bootlegs from http://www.samuraimoviedvd.com/, it's where I bought them from. They're pricey as hell otherwise.

Oh, and I just remembered Destiny's Son, which is awesome as well

Sweet, Destiny's Son is another i've been wanting to get a hold of... but of course it's been a bitch trying to find a decent release. Actually, it seems to be a bitch getting a good release of any Ichikawa Raizo films period.

Looks like i'll likely be looking into that site you listed, good stuff. Thanks.

Probably my FAVORITE series is Sleepy Eyes of Death. It was a part of that golden age Daiei era of Chambara films. As far as I know there is no US DVD of that one. All that's available is the VHS tapes from Animego that came out several years ago. It guest stars a lot of familiar actors to the chambara era. The main characters rival was played by Tomisaburo Wakayama (aka Ogami Itto from Lone wolf and Cub fame). Sadly however the actor who played the main character of Nemuri Kyoshiro died fairly young so they had to stop the series.

Nemuri Kyoshiro is probably the toughest samurai Iĺve ever seen on film, although he has a penchant of getting poisoned by tea from a hot chick pretty frequently.

Seriously go do yourself a favor and see Sleepy Eyes of Death immediately.

                        Nemuri Kyoshiro 2: Sh˘bu (1964)
aka "Sleepy Eyes of Death: Sword of Adventure"
                        Nemuri Kyoshiro 3: Engetsugiri (1964)
aka "Sleepy Eyes of Death: Full Circle Killing"
                        Nemuri Kyoshiro 4: Joyoken (1964)
aka "Sleepy Eyes of Death: Sword of Seduction"
                        Nemuri Kyoshiro 1: Sappocho (1963)
aka "Sleepy Eyes of Death: The Chinese Jade"
                        Nemuri Kyoshiro 5: Enjo-ken (1965)
aka "Sleepy Eyes of Death: Sword of Fire"
                        Nemuri Kyoshiro 7: Tajo-ken (1966)
aka "Sleepy Eyes of Death: The Mask of the Princess"
                        Nemuri Ky˘shir˘ 6: Masho-ken (1965)
aka "Sleepy Eyes of Death: Sword of Satan"
Nemuri Kyoshiro 10: Onna jigoku (196
aka "Sleepy Eyes of Death: Hell Is a Woman"
                        Nemuri Ky˘shir˘ 11: Hito hada kumo (196
aka "Sleepy Eyes of Death: In the Spider's Lair"
                        Nemuri Kyoshiro 12: Akujo-gari (1969)
aka "Sleepy Eyes of Death: Castle Menagerie"
                        Nemuri Kyoshiro 8: Burai-ken (1966)
