  • This is England

Shane Meadows is back with This is England. I've been looking forward to this film for years and I finally got to see it on Friday. After Dead Man's Shoes I had high hopes for his next film and I wasn't dissapointed in the least. It is a masterpiece. The performances, casting, directing, writing...etc it's all brilliant. I urge everyone in the UK to go and watch it NOW.

The film is set in England, 1983 and follows an inocent 12 year old (Shaun) who has just lost his Dad in the Falklands. He gets bullied in school on the last day of term about his apperance. On the way home he encounters a group of skinheads fronted by Woody, who instantly takes Shaun under his wing. Things are looking up for Shaun, until Combo is let out of prison...

This is without a doubt the best film about skinheads I have ever seen 5/5. I'm just worried it wont translate well to the international audince, i'm interested in hearing your thoughts. I hope you enjoy/enjoyed it as much as I did.

Meadows' second best movie behind Dead Man's Shoes.

As far as it translating to international audiences, my fiancée is American and she loved it too... Although I guess it may not have had the same impact for her as it did for someone growing up in the 80's in the UK.

I loved it. I found it quite touching. I think the most interesting thing about it was how they all interacted with Andrew Shim's character. They seemed so conflicted at times with their beliefs.

I haven't seen a Shane Meadows movie yet that I haven't liked or loved.

It was only released in the UK a couple of weeks ago, so you'll probably have a bit of a wait (or to acquire it somehow) if Dead Man's Shoes was anything to go by.

It comes out on November 13th on DVD in the U.S. I also saw the movie, and even though I would never throw around the word masterpiece, it was pretty good and definitely the most realistic film about the skinhead subculture. I've got a full review and a drinking game at my website... click on sig. to check it out.

It's great, with a vast array of complex sympathetic and likable characters - considering the subject tone. The movie highlights the true origins in the skinhead movement ( the soundtrack is a big hint) as well as downplay the actions of war using the Falklands war to represent views of the war on Terror now.
The acting is excellent from the entire cast, noticably the likeable Turgoose and venomous yet fragile Graham. Rosemund Hanson was funny as Turgoose's kooky girlfriend, Smell. She was kinda cute in a strange way as well. Thick as shit, but twice as tasty.
The finale was one you could see coming, but the actual final scene is heart wrenching, and identifies more with the political stances our government has made now, and bites down hard and doesnt let go.
Turgoose is amazing. From the first scene, to the last - he had a hold on me. A child who finds some kind of identity in his new friends and stabilizes himself. Even under Graham's influence, he's still a child naive to Graham's true beliefs.
                        It's worth a watch, totally.

Definately a great watch. Loved the soundtrack and the characters. There were times that seemed a little mellow dramatic (as there was one scene in DMS) but over all and excellent film. I prefer Dead Mans Shoes to this but this is still definitaly worth a purchase.

You know, I was expecting a "This is Sparta" parody.
