David Cronenberg‘s Scanners is coming back to life as a television series for HBO, THR reports this afternoon, the upcoming series based on the Canadian sci-fi/horror movie from 1981.

William Bridges (“Black Mirror”) will be serving as the writer and showrunner of the series, with Yann Demange (“Lovecraft Country”) on board to direct as well as produce.

THR reminds, “Scanners told of a small group of super-powered people with a range of psychic, telepathic and telekenetic power.

“One faction of scanners, as these people were labeled, were led by a power-mad man named Revok, played by Michael Ironside, who aims to take over the world, while a private security firm recruits its own scanners to stop him for its own, possibly shady, reasons.”

THR also details, “The series is being described as a visceral thriller set in the mind-bending world of Cronenberg’s film. It will focus on two women living on the fringes of modern society who are pursued by relentless agents with unimaginable powers and thus must learn to work together to topple a vast conspiracy determined to bring them to heel.”

The series is a co-production between HBO, Media Res Studio and Wayward Films.

David Cronenberg is on board as executive producer.

Cronenberg’s original Scanners spawned two sequels, The New Order in 1991 and The Takeover in 1992. Spinoff movies Scanner Cop and Scanner Cop II followed in the mid 1990s.

The master of body horror returned to that arena earlier this year with Crimes of the Future, and David Cronenberg’s next movie as director is set to be a film titled The Shrouds.

Writer in the horror community since 2008. Editor in Chief of Bloody Disgusting. Owns Eli Roth's prop corpse from Piranha 3D. Has four awesome cats. Still plays with toys.
