Definitely disagree, Aenima is imo their best effort. Lateralus may be more refined, more precise considering songwriting, but Aenima is far more gripping on an emotional level, musically and lyrically.

That soon. I wish they'd take more time to really develop the songs

A little over a month ago, Maynard was asked about when fans could expect a new record from TOOL, and he said the band is still in writing mode. Looks like they had a really productive month, because according to the band's newsletter, they entered the studio last week.

While the newsletter update is a bit cryptic and incoherent (read it on the band's official page), what I gather is that on Thanksgiving day, the band entered their home studio with producer Joe Barresi and began tracking the new album. The band is going anolog for the sessions using a rare Studer A827 analog tape recorder (going for a cool $11.5k on eBay). Apparently, during the 4-day weekend, they completed a bunch of recordings.

Additionally, there are some hints of a short run of winter tour dates. We'll have to wait and see for that. Who's pumped?

Has anyone heard anything new? Id imagine the hold up for the 3rd time in a row is Maynard touring with Puscifer and APC. The wait is killing me.

Tool are set to return in 2013 with a new album, which will mark the fifth release from their 22-year reign as the kings of prog metal.

According to a timetable that drummer Danny Carey set forth in a March interview, work on Tool’s new album would likely be complete by the end of 2012. Whether or not that is the case remains to be determined, what we do know is that the album definitely won’t be out until some point in 2013.

Although it seems like 10,000 days have passed since the release of their previous effort — it has actually been 2,416 days between then and the time this article was written — the band is reportedly quite serious about finishing the new album. In early November, reports said they had turned down several tour offers to focus on the task at hand. They will, however, perform at the Japanese outing of Ozzfest this May. Does that mean the new album will be out by then? No, but we hope it will be.

As far as what we can expect from the new album — well, expect a Tool album. Carey confirmed that bassist Justin Chancellor has been “prolific” on the new stuff and had brought in “tons of riffs.” He also revealed that there would be even more odd time signatures, which, along with lengthy tracks, is one of their trademarks.

We just hope that after another period of more than 5 years between new albums, Tool throws us a few more songs than they did last time. ’10,000 Days’ was great but when you subtract all the white noise, intros, instrumentals, interludes and transitions, you’re left with about 7 or 8 songs. We love it when Tool gets weird as much as anyone does, but we’re rooting for more killer and less filler this time around. No matter what, we’re confident it will be one of the year’s (possibly the decade’s) best, even if the whole thing is comprised of one 63-minute song.

I wouldn't get your hopes up too much. The album will be released when it's ready, and Tool is notorious for leading their fans on, with false hope on release dates.

It may be ready for 2013, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was delayed further. Like a year or two further. Tool is easily in my top 3 bands, but they're probably the most frustrating band, when it comes to releasing new material. I wish Maynard would just concentrate on Tool, instead of branching out. He is pretty much the sole reason why it takes so fucking long for Tool to release new stuff.

                          True.

They always fuck with the fans by releasing false release dates etc. I guess I'll believe it when the CD is in my hand, but any news is good news as they're a notoriously quiet camp.

Id like this one to be more original than 10,000 Days which to me sounded like rejected tracks from Lateralus. It is just to annoying that they put so much time between albums. Maynard is a great vocalist but I think he is stalling by apparently recording a new Pucsifer album. I mean they are getting up there in age and Im a bit worried this may be their last album, I hope not.

Most frustrating band regarding touring as well. Didn't see those diva fuckers for years now.
