'The Nanny': Nikyatu Jusu's Horror Drama Wins Sundance's Top Prize!

Filmmaker Nikyatu Jusu has lined up another genre project on the heels of winning the U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival for her dramatic horror film Nanny. Per Deadline, Monkeypaw and Universal have landed the rights to Jusu’s next feature, an untitled horror film.

The genre project is based on an original idea by Jusu, but plot details remain under wraps at this time. She’ll co-write with Fredrica Bailey.

“Monkeypaw is thrilled to be teaming up with Nikyatu on her next project and believe she is a singular talent with brilliant stories to tell. We are so pleased that Nanny has been celebrated by Sundance and we can’t wait for audiences to see what’s coming next,” said Monkeypaw President Win Rosenfeld.

Monkeypaw has an exclusive five-year production partnership with Universal Pictures and with Universal Studio Group, and most recently released Candyman. Next for Monkeypaw is Jordan Peele’s Nope for Universal in July 2022 and Wendell & Wild from director Henry Selick.

In Jusu’s debut, Nanny, “Anna Diop stars as Aisha, an undocumented nanny working for a privileged couple in New York City. As she prepares for the arrival of the son she left behind in Senegal, a violent supernatural presence invades her reality, threatening the American dream she is painstakingly piecing together.

Nanny also features performances by Michelle Monaghan, Sinqua Walls, Morgan Spector, Rose Decker, and Leslie Uggams.

‘Drop’ – Violett Beane Joins the Cast of Christopher Landon’s New Thriller

Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day, Freaky) is staying busy here in 2024, directing not only the werewolf movie Big Bad but also an upcoming thriller titled Drop.

The project for Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes is being described as a “fast-paced thriller,” and Deadline reports today that Violett Beane (Truth or Dare) has joined the cast.

Newcomer Jacob Robinson has also signed on to star in the mysterious thriller. Previously announced, Meghann Fahy (“White Lotus”) will be leading the cast.

Landon recently teased on Twitter, “This is my love letter to DePalma.”

Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach wrote the script.

Michael Bay, Jason Blum, Brad Fuller and Cameron Fuller — “who brought the script in to Platinum Dunes” — are producing the upcoming Drop. Sam Lerner is an executive producer.

THR notes, “The film is a Platinum Dunes and Blumhouse production for Universal.”
