  • Just before Rhino Attack

Chantal Beyer and her husband Sven Fouche, left, pose for a photograph with rhinos at the Aloe Ridge Nature Reserve near Johannesburg South Africa last weekend. Just after the photo was taken, the closest rhino attacked Beyer and its horn penetrated Beyer's chest from behind, resulting in a collapsed lung and broken ribs.

JOHANNESBURG When do you not listen to the African wildlife expert? When he tells you to stand closer to the rhino.

That suggestion by a South African game park owner resulted in serious injuries to a 24-year-old woman from Johannesburg.

The Beeld newspaper reported Tuesday that Chantal Beyer said the game park owner snapped pictures and suggested that she "stand just a little bit closer" seconds before the attack. Photos show Beyer and her husband only feet away from two rhinos.

The paper said that just after the photo was snapped, the rhino attacked, and its horn penetrated Beyers' chest from behind, resulting in a collapsed lung and broken ribs, the paper said. The Aloe Ridge Hotel and Nature Reserve, where the incident took place, declined to comment Tuesday.

This cracked me the fuck up. Sure, get closer to the deadly rhino so you can get a good picture. What could possibly go wrong?

Or he was thinking, "I wonder just how dumb these people are. Will they actually stand a few feet from a rhino, just because I say so?"

The answer is yes, people are dumb.

Reminds me of folks who feed bears out of their car windows and then are surprised when the bear attacks or pulverizes their vehicle. Silly people

I know if I ever went out into the wilderness in a place such as South Africa where most of the animals are not only unpredictable but fucking mammoth unstoppable beasts the last thing I would do is get out and pose for a picture. Didnt anyone learn anything when Roy was nearly killed in Vegas during that Sigfried and Roy show?

Pretty disturbing knowing that just after this pic was taken she was gorged and killed, but how bloody stupid are people. It's her own fault.

It's like saying, hey jump into the water next to that great white shark so I can take a pic. What could possibly go wrong ?

The weird thing about this story is that the couple are from South Africa, as of course, is the Ranger. They really should have known better.

Usually it's holiday snap "foreign" tourists that jump out the vehicle to take a shot of a lion whilst uttering "here puss, puss" and "awww, isn't he cute?" before a loud roar is heard and they become another "tourist thought lions are like domestic cats" statistic.

There's absolutely no second chances in Africa. In the wild or in the urban streets.
