The problem isn't CGI being used, it's the way that it's used. If it's used in a way that you don't notice or in a way where it blends in seamlessly, it's fine. I do prefer that movies use as much make-up & prosthetics as possible, but in watching the behind the scenes for some films, their reasoning for going the CGI route makes sense.
Sometimes it's the easier process to take, not out of laziness, but just to save everyone involved time doing something unnecessarily.
For instance, most people probably didn't notice that half of the blade that was in Richie's head in the reboot was CGI.
