The Master - 10/10

My second viewing. This is my favorite film released since 2007s There Will Be Blood. Paul Thomas Anderson makes movies like no one else can. Beautifully shot, shockingly profound, and acted with professional genius. A movie about two men who are insane in their own ways that find a sort of duality in one another while seeking out their own ambitions separately. Who is The Master? Is Freddie becoming the master of his own life? Or in Lancaster the true master of the organization that seeks to control all in his reach?

There isn't a single thing about this movie that I don't like. It is a hypnotic work of pure genius.

I'll definitely be giving this a second watch when I have the chance.

It really is a unique film.

The movie was showing at a local specialty theater for one night only so I called in sick at work just so I could go.

The showed it in 70mm. What a great experience.

That's awesome.

I got to see it in 70mm as well. The theater that showed it, when they had the premier PT Anderson was there and did a Q&A after the screening. There were people lined up around the block. Sadly, I had to work and couldn't go.

Bummer!

I saw an awesome Q&A with PTA on youtube a few weeks ago about the Master. He seemed very fleeting and distant about it. Interesting take on his own film.

I feel this is a movie that will age very well. It is beyond its time in my opinion.

It's beyond anything, if you ask me. Such a polarizing film and unique cinematic experience, and one that will reward with repeat viewings. It's themes can be analyzed a million different ways but there is no right or wrong answer. It reminds me of Mulholland Drive in that sense.

It's undefinable. It's just there, like a dream and I'm sure this is PT's goal with this film.

Here's the Q&A from the theater here in Melbourne that I was talking about.

Wonderful description. This movie can mean a million things to a million different people.

I'm excited to see what PTA does next. I honestly don't think he'll make as cerebral a film as this again. I believe he will do a bit more "conventional" a film. Either way, I'm happy we have this guy making movies.

He is without a doubt one of the finest directors of our generation.

Apparently he's reteaming with Joaquin for his next project, which is this

Quote:
Anderson’s next project will be an adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s book Inherent Vice, which follows a marijuana-smoking private investigator in L.A. during the 1960’s. In a profile done by the New York Times, Anderson stated he has a good deal of writing done for the adaptation and hopes to begin shooting next year.
