I popped in my LEATHERFACE DVD again to watch the features and listen to the commentary, which since I have a weird affinity for this film I really appreciate. Years ago I'd buy old lots of Fangoria's off Ebay. David J. Schow (screenwriter for TCM3, the remake and amazing fiction writer- he also did THE CROW but I guess he lost arbitration on that?) wrote a set diary while they filmed LEATHERFACE in Fango, then detailed the censorship issues following.
I love that they bothered to include extras about it on the DVD- even if you hate the film, it's an interesting look at how horror was being handled by studios. I even emailed director Jeff Burr a few months back and brought it up (super sweet guy that put up with my nerdiness) and it's just funny to him that the film he's most known for is the one he has the least to do with. TCM 2 is sill my fave, but 3 gets unfairly picked on- s ave for the Ken Fired happy zombie, good lord. But it's creepy, Viggo Mortensen is a hot weirdo in it, and Kate Hodge is a national treasure. Also; early-90's KNB effects? That's pure horror rock n roll. |

It's one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Feel free to read through the TCM3D thread for my thoughts. I'm not wasting any more time on it.

Another piece of LEATHERFACE lore I love- producer Mark Ordesky wanted Peter Jackson to direct, but obviously didn't get his wish. He did get New Line Jackson later with LORD OF THE RINGS. I remember Viggo said he was last minute casting for Aragorn- would his name have come up if not for TCM 3? Dun dun DUN!
Seriously, a TCM movie with Peter Jackson directing it back in his gonzo horror days... the mind boggles. |
