Yes a very good film. Haneke's own comments offer the most insight. The darkest element is the suggestion that others (most obviously the brother-in-law) have a sense of what's happening, but also understand that they themselves aren't developed enough to see it clearly, or to object.
Spoiler Below
I was most reminded of the poem Richard Cory by EA Robinson

This is a great film, very depressing but worth watching. It needs a little patience but your patience is rewarded there's a couple of Haneke films I haven't seen yet like Amour but my personal fave was The Piano Teacher.

The Piano Teacher was sensational! I loved how awkward the whole thing was and the acting was sublime. My favourite Haneke film was Hidden, but now I'm not sure if it's The Piano Teacher too. Amour is amazing too. It's the only film to make me properly cry.

Hidden is great but like you say I also love how awkward The Piano Teacher was and it is above Hidden for me for how amazing it is. I need to watch Amour.
