The show was originally pitched as a "film noir" style detective serial set in high school with a much darker tone, but after the unaired pilot was shown to the studio the change was made and the show ended up being shot more "normal". I know the show is a little slow at the start, but once you get into the story it gets very addicting!

Glad I'm not alone. Felt the exact same way. Only made it through 3 episodes before I had to call it quits.
