I think lots of movies will be remembered as classics for many different reasons. Like High Tension is a classic to me, and will be remembered years from now, as launching french horror into the mainstream horror community. Rob Zombies The Devil Rejects (I saw it before house of the devil) is an example of raw violence, that reminisces back to the original ISOYG, or LHOTL. I think his movies will be remembered kind of in the same vein. Groundhouse will be remembered simply because of who made it. I choose to use the word "remembered" instead of "classic", because I still think the movies I'm listing are good films overall. Anyways looking at the post I quoted, I guess the movies I list are classic, and cult, and I've included them for many dif reasons. Poultreygeist, Citizen Toxie, Return to Nuke Em' High Gingersnaps (series, not just the first.) Final Destination Blade II/ Pan's Labyrinth 28 Days Later Jason X May The Ring / The Grudge (asian to english remake association) High Tention/The Hills Have Eyes (Alex Aja violent intro to American audience) Shaun of the Dead Zombieland Three Extremes... (pairing of 3 of asia's finest directors to make an anthology) The Descent (legitimately one of the best horror movies ever) The Devils Rejects Saw American Psycho Behind the Mask (found footage deconstruction comedy horror) Slither (perfect combo of gore, laughs, and sci-fi horror) Grindhouse The Mist (can be considered one of the greatest modern horror films) Deadgirl (hmm, this didn't get a lot of exposure, but I love it) Eden Lake (^^ it's just a great exercise in violent thriller horror) Let the Right One In ("classic" just oozes from this movie. no brainer really) Pulse (asian, not that "one of the worst remakes ever" American one. Drag Me to Hell (simply for being Raimi's return. Was a good movie too) The House of the Devil (good movie that will remind you of other true classics) Trick R Treat Stake Land Scream 4 The Bay (environment horror that will make you squirm for days) Cabin in the Woods Human Centipede (these movies WILL be remembered. The became pop culture phenomenons, and aside from that, I truly think the 2nd film was a masterpiece, even if it's tough to sit through. |

With that, I would have to give the last couple decades to the British. Personally, I already consider these classics: The Descent 28 Days Later Eden Lake Attack the Block Shaun of the Dead Kill List and not horror but the neo-noirish Red Riding Trilogy is pretty great too. |

Halloween and Halloween 2 will be remembered, but for all the wrong reasons.

What about it? Fuck that shit.
I Saw The Devil Prometheus MAYBE Original Saw Cabin In The Woods Off the top of my head. It's been pretty shitting since 2000 onwards.

And I don't think we can include Scream. The first two came out in the '90's, the third one was completely forgettable & sucks, and part 4 is just a lackluster rehash of parts one & two. Had Scream 4 actually delivered like the first, then it'd maybe be considered a classic eventually, but it fell way short of everyone's expectations.
I think the 2000's & up to this point will be remembered as being a stale & lazy period of horror. You have a few classics that you recognize as being so immediately, a couple good movies, & then the rest are fucking awful.

Let The Right One In stands head and shoulders above them all, IMO.
Hopefully the worthless US remake won't be remembered more. I don't see how it could... It's inferior in every way. |
