There has been a couple of (extremely bad) adaptations of the Dunwich horror already. Flashbacks have been used in movies before so that shouldn’t be a problem, and since horror (at least IMO) is all about tension and atmosphere, I think the story could be successfully adapted if put in the hands of the right director. You also have the Shadow…[Read more]

I just saw another one, Altitude about a bunch of young people getting stuck in an airplane with a pretty Lovecraftian horror lurking in the clouds with them.

I think I read somewhere that he might have had syphilis which could lead to several of the symptoms you summarized above. He could also have suffered from some sort of hereditary psychological disorder as his father was institutionalized.

@ lafuria: Have you seen the TV movie based upon that story? I think it is called the resurrected if I remember correctly. I think it was pretty well made and pretty true to the original story.

Since “At the mountains of madness” is now confirmed to be made as a high budget movie, it wouldn’t surprise me if we will see reasonably “high quality” adaptations of other Lovecraft stories on the big screen in the near future.

Personally I think the Dunwich horror as a big budget movie would be great fun, but I would be pleased with any…[Read more]

The Cthulhu movie, while focusing a bit much on the sexual orientation of it’s protagonist, definitively had a bleak and “Lovecraftian” atmosphere. It is an indy flick, and pretty slow moving, but the few “scary” scenes were well made and the lighting and cinematography is excellent at times.

  • Many adaptations (however bad) of Lovecraft’s works have been made, but there also exists several films, which might not be directly based upon anything Lovecraft himself wrote, but is heavily influenced or inspired by it. Below is a list of several such movies. If you know of any others please post them.

I must say that the Call of Cthulhu made by the H.P Lovecraft historical society is the most faithful adaptation, although it might not be the most entertaining.

Not as much as the gore goes, but for the cheezy one liners and action sequences (but I guess that could be said about most of Arnie’s films :P ). They still kick-ass but are way out there as far as believability goes. I also remembered another recent over the top movie, Ninja Assassin.

In no particular order, movies I find to be over the top in one way or another: Braindead (Dead alive), Evil dead trilogy, Drag me to hell, Re-animator series, Bad taste, Black sheep, Shoot’em up, The tournament, Planet terror, Rambo 3, The human centipede, Ichi the killer, Kung fu hustle, Terminator 2, Doomsday and probably a dozen more I can’t…[Read more]

I’ve always had a soft spot for At the mountains of madness, and the chilling discoveries the antagonists found during their expedition changed the way I thought about humanity and our place in the universe. I can’t wait for the movie adaptation by Guilermo del Toro (one of my favorite directors to boot :D ).

My fave metal band currently is Kamelot, although I listen to all kinds of metal. My all time favorite horror flick is Martyrs, closely followed by the original Hellraiser movie. I also really like The Descent.
