Mexican Horror Brand Mórbido Acquired for U.S. Rights

VIVA Pictures has announced that they have acquired the U.S. rights to the Mexican horror brand Mórbido with initial plans set for a movie label that will roll out three films: The Ouija Summoning, Charlie Charlie, and Effigy.

VIVA president Victor Elizalde gushes, “We’re extremely excited by the myriad of opportunities that exist with the Mórbido brand and lifestyle. Horror and sci-fi fans are typically the most loyal followers of any type of genre. The audiences behind the platforms that Pablo has created are indicative of this fact and we look forward to expanding Mórbido’s presence into the U.S. and Canada.

Meanwhile, Mórbido CEO Pablo Guisa Koestinger explains, “It is wonderful to see Mórbido expanding globally. As the creator of the brand as well as being a fan myself, I am looking forward to seeing this partnership truly grow. Mórbido has become a reference in horror as well as a lifestyle and we are happy to be sharing it with the U.S.

About Mórbido:

Mórbido was conceived in 2007 as an International Horror and Fantasy Film Festival. It was created to serve as a window to promote Mexican films and revive the long tradition of producing horror and fantasy films in México. After its first event in 2008, Mórbido quickly evolved to become something greater than merely a festival; it became the largest Spanish-speaking multi-platform content promoter and content creator related to fantasy and horror.

Filming is underway on The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man for Universal and Blumhouse, which will be howling its way into theaters on January 17, 2025.

Deadline reports that Matilda Firth (Disenchanted) is the latest actor to sign on, joining Christopher Abbott (Poor Things),  Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel), and Sam Jaeger.

The project will mark Whannell’s second monster movie and fourth directing collaboration with Blumhouse Productions (The Invisible Man, Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3).

Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott as a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.

Writers include Whannell & Corbett Tuck as well as Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo.

Jason Blum is producing the film. Ryan Gosling, Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner and Whannell are executive producers. Wolf Man is a Blumhouse and Motel Movies production.

In the wake of the failed Dark Universe, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man has been the only real success story for the Universal Monsters brand, which has been struggling with recent box office flops including the comedic Renfield and period horror movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Giving him the keys to the castle once more seems like a wise idea, to say the least.
