I Called the ‘Ouija: Origin of Evil’ Number and Got Screamed At

Published

Universal Pictures has just posted a fun little video for their upcoming supernatural horror film Ouija: Origin of Evil (review), which comes out this Friday, October 21st. The video is basically a commercial for Hasbro’s Ouija spirit board that splices in a lot of scenes from the movie. It also includes a few rules that should be strictly followed by anyone who wants to play with such a board:

1) Never play alone
2) Never play in a graveyard
3) Always say goodbye

Clearly the rules were not adhered to by the people playing or else there wouldn’t be a movie coming out, would there?

Also, there’s a phone number that keeps showing up throughout the video: 1 (844) 666-1021. Seeing it, I decided what the hell and gave it a call. The gist of the pre-recorded message is that the young girl Doris says that no one is available and then there are some static bursts and random screams and creepy messages. The call ends with an offer for the same line to remind you on Friday to go see the movie on opening night. It’s definitely a cute gimmick, although I wish there had been a bit more to it. Why not give it a try for yourself and let us know your thoughts in the comments?

The sequel takes place in 1965 Los Angeles where a widowed mother and her two daughters add a new stunt to bolster their séance scam business and unwittingly invite authentic evil into their home. The youngest daughter is overtaken by the merciless spirit, forcing this small family to confront unthinkable fears to save her and send her possessor back to the other side.

Elizabeth Reaser, Annalise Basso, Lulu Wilson and Henry Thomas star in Ouija: Origin of Evil, which was directed by Mike Flanagan (Hush).

In addition to Leigh Whannell’s upcoming Universal Monsters movie Wolf Man, Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel) has also joined the cast of Weapons, THR has announced tonight.

Weapons is the new horror movie from New Line Cinema and director Zach Cregger (Barbarian), with Julia Garner joining the previously announced Josh Brolin (Dune 2).

The upcoming Weapons is from writer/director Zach Cregger, who will also produce alongside his Barbarian producing team: Roy Lee of Vertigo and J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures. Vertigo’s Miri Yoon also produces.

The Hollywood Reporter teases, “Plot details for Weapons are being kept holstered but it is described as a multi and inter-related story horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia, the 1999 actor-crammed showcase from filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.”

Cregger was a founding member and writer for the New York comedy troupe “The Whitest Kids U’Know,” which he started while attending The School of Visual Arts. The award-winning group’s self-titled sketch comedy show ran for five seasons on IFC-TV and Fuse. He was also a series regular on Jimmy Fallon’s NBC series “Guys with Kids” and the TBS hit series “Wrecked,” and was featured in a recurring role on the NBC series “About a Boy.”

Weapons will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
