James Wan and Alex Aja Are Making a Horror Movie Together!

What will happen when two of the most influential horror filmmakers align?

Lionsgate and Saw creator James Wan are reuniting on a new thriller that also reunites the studio with High Tension‘s Alexandre Aja.

Lionsgate has acquired rights to the thriller Smart House with Wan attached to produce and Aja directing, Variety reports.

Smart House is a thriller about a family in the witness protection program placed in the custody of a state of the art, autonomous ‘smart house.’ When a group of assassins locates the family, the house goes into a lethal defense mode.

Smart House is based on an original idea by Wan, who will produce the film under his Atomic Monster company banner with head of production Michael Clear.

Aja, whose directing credits include Piranha 3D and The Hills Have Eyes, will direct from a script by Brad Keene. Aja is also a producer on the film along with Gregory Levasseur.

Wan directed Lionsgate’s original SAW movie, which was his first feature film, and executive produced all its sequels. He was also the director of the first two Insidious and The Conjuring films. Atomic Monster has produced the films Lights Out, Annabelle, the upcoming Annabelle 2 and The Nun along with the CBS/Lionsgate television series “MacGyver,” airing on CBS.

  • DarkBree

    OMG!! This will be amazing.

  • Gluke

This sounds awesome! Alexandre Aja has made a couple of my favorite movies, so I’ll have to see this!

  • Andrew

    awesome.

love alexandre so much and Wan knows what makes a horror movie successful so together are dynamite! But another home invasion film? come up with something better!

    • The chicken man

Agreed. The home invasion plot is donezo.

    • J Jett

but this doesn’t sound like the normal home invasion gig. it sounds like it’s going for something different.

      • pablitonizer

I hope so J! I love Alexandre so let’s wait and see

    PRAISE!

there will never be enough home invasion films. Deal with it.

    • James Allard

Absolutely. I have a script I have been working on for a while that is a home invasion flick. Nothing will come of it, I am sure but then again, I don’t care. I love this subset and writing one of my own makes me happy.

Very cool! They are both super talented. The Hills Have Eyes is one of the best remakes ever. That movie gives me anxiety every time I watch it.

  • DBZEROGRAVITY

wow, this is exciting news. both have done great things for horror

Haha I remember when the general concept was parodied in the Simpsons. (One of the Treehouse of Horror I think) The plot here sounds pretty bizarre but with some talented people like Aja and Wan behind the camera this will hopefully be pretty good.

    • Valak

I remember that Simpsons episode, Pierce Brosnan played the voice of the computer system that controlled the house and developed the hots for Marge!

  • How is Aja any influential? His output after HT was bullcrap.

While I would like to agree with you, I would have to say that Horns is an exception.

    • JoeInTheBox

I consider his Hills Have Eyes to be better than the original, and the best movie he’s done. HT was ruined for me with the ending. Horns is also underrated.

  • ThunderDragoon

Jump jump the house is jumpin’.

  • REC03

Aja can be hit and miss but with a decent script he brings it. this sounds like fun.
