Action director Renny Harlin – best known for Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, as well as Exorcist: The Beginning – is mixing all sorts of genres with his next pic, which will be a Chinese project.
The Finnish filmmaker has signed on to helm The Hanging Coffin for Shanghai Film Group and Shanghai New Wave Films, writes THR.
Here’s the kicker, it’s described as an action-adventure-thriller featuring extreme sports, tomb raiding and mutant creatures. Hopefully, they aren’t planning on calling it a “sporror” film.
The script was penned by Tony Jaswinski, the emerging Los Angeles-based screenwriter behind Blake Lively’s shark horror hit The Shallows (2016).
Although it will be primarily in Chinese, the film is expected to star both Hollywood and Chinese talent, with casting announcements to be made in the coming months, according to the production partners.
The project was announced Sunday during the first full day of the Shanghai International Film Festival.
