Stars Jason Statham and Li Bingbing Reflect On Challenging ‘The Meg’ Shoot

Ahead of this coming August’s theatrical release here in the States, director Jon Turteltaub’s The Meg got its own press conference in Shanghai over the weekend, with stars Jason Statham and Li Bingbing on hand to answer questions and hype up the mega-shark flick.

During the event, Statham described the shoot as his toughest to date.

Via China.Org, “Jason Statham said The Meg was probably the most challenging film he had ever worked on. He added that it was very hard to communicate when shooting underwater scenes because they require a lot physical strength, endurance, and patience.

As for Bingbing, there was a time on set where she thought she was going to die.

I’ve always been afraid of water, but one of my scenes required me to be put in a cage five or six meters underwater, and I had to hold my breath for a very long time,” the actress told the crowd at the Shanghai International Film Festival. “We had to reshoot the scene again and again and I felt like I was going to die.”

She added, “When they took me out of the water, the director came to compliment me, but I was too weak to speak, then he started to fear that I was really close to death.”

The Meg will swim into theaters on August 10, 2018.
