‘Are You Afraid of the Dark?’ Writer Promises to Honor Show’s Scary Tone

Don’t worry, Midnight Society. We’re in good hands.

Few people in the entertainment industry had a better year than Gary Dauberman, who penned the horror hits Annabelle: Creation and IT. Both films were MASSIVE successes at the box office, while also being damn good horror movies, turning Dauberman into one of the hottest names in horror at the moment.

As we told you last night, Dauberman has been hired to write and produce a feature film based on the Nickelodeon series Are You Afraid of the Dark? for Paramount Players. We don’t yet know much of anything about the approach Dauberman is taking to the material, but he does promise it will honor the tone of the ’90s series.

The show is about the shared experience of telling stories — especially scary ones. We’re going to celebrate that with this movie and honor the darker, scarier tone of the show, which was really groundbreaking for Nickelodeon at the time. I hope the Midnight Society approves,” Dauberman told THR.

Matt Kaplan is also on board to produce.

    I’m excited

I do feel it’s gonna be an Anthology unless he goes to a different route involving the members of The Midnight Society.

Well if he follows the tone than he should do alright. I mean to be soley responsible for writing ‘Annabelle: Creation’ & ‘IT’ he must be doing something ‘write’! (yes I’m including the pun). Whether you personally liked the films or not you can’t argue with the financial success, and that happens to help the genre in the long run, well he has my support! The last time I heard of a writer being on a streak like this commercially was Kevin Williamson with ‘Scream’.

Loved both films. Annabelle was a great surprise.

Definitely excited for this. It would be really cool if the original cast members from the series made cameos or were in the movie in some capacity.

Agreed. I always thought it was a missed opportunity to not have more former cast members appear in the Silver Sight 3-parter.

This sounds much more promising than the Goosebumps movie, which was serviceable but not great. Then again, Are You Afraid of the Dark was always a cut above Goosebumps anyway. Here’s hoping!

    Bless you Dauberman. Bless you.

    This is pretty cool!
