After watching director Mike Flanagan’s Gerald’s Game on Netflix back in September, I found myself unable to sleep comfortably. Visions of the “degloving” scene danced in my head, but more specifically, it was the evil “Moonlight Man” that kept me awake.
Played by “Twin Peaks” star Carel Struycken, the Moonlight Man appears nightly at the foot of the bed Jessie is shackled to, and he’s nothing short of pure nightmare fuel. In fact, I’d argue that the Moonlight Man is the downright scariest character in a horror movie this entire year.
Peeling back the curtain, makeup FX legend Robert Kurtzman just shared some behind the scenes shots from the Gerald’s Game set over on Facebook, highlighting the process that went into turning Struycken into a nightmarish movie monster.
“In light of all the talk about the de-gloving in Gerald’s Game, I thought I would share a couple of my favorites of me with the Moonlight Man,” said Kurtzman. “Pleasure to work on Carel Struycken with this makeup. What a trooper! Had a great time working with all. Mike Flanagan (director), the amazing performances by Carla Gugino and Bruce Greenwood, along with the rest of the cast and great crew!”
Netflix films don’t come with special features, so it’s awesome to see these pics!
