X-Men Horror Film ‘The New Mutants’ Bumped Completely Out of 2018

One of our most anticipated horror movies of 2018 *was* Josh Boone’s superhero horror movie The New Mutants, which had been set for release on April 13, 2018.

Today, unfortunately, we’ve learned that the film has been bumped a full 10 months, taking it out of 2018 entirely. The new date? February 22, 2019.

Well. Now it’s one of our most anticipated movies of 2019, I guess.

In the film, “five young mutants, just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves.”

The cast includes Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa a.k.a Sunspot, a mutant with the ability to absorb and channel solar power; Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar, the Native American telepath also known as “Mirage”; Alice Braga as Dr. Cecilia Reyes, a medical doctor who has the ability to generate a protective bio-field around herself but also has more going on than she lets on; Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin, also known as Magik, who uses teleportation; Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie, a.k.a. Cannonball; and Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair, a.k.a. Wolfsbane, who can turn into a wolf.

Boone directed from a script he co-wrote with Knate Lee.

I am beyond pissed. So I guess Fox are chickening out and scared to release it. Maybe it sucks. Seems like another RINGS situation.

Whatever. I’m not going to follow it any more. This is a,path straight for garbage alley if I ever knew one. Not a way to inspire confidence in your product, idiots.

    • Patrick M

According to Deadline’s news story, it’s more to do with Gore Verbinski leaving the “Gambit” movie, which shifts out of the 2019 slot now filled by “The New Mutants”. Fox playing musical chairs, news at 11…

    • Bender

Deadpool 2 is being released May 18th now to beat Han Solo to the punch. Why would Fox want two Xmen movies in theatres at same time? Your judgements are wrong.

  • Hash-Slinging Slasher

Erm, but…. I already saw the trailer at the theater… http://www…tttt…ffff….

  • D. Maki

Guess Disney is gonna screw the crap outta this and make it G. >_>

    • Silhouetters

      Might make it better.
Anything’s better than the cancer presented in that trailer.

      • Nahuel Benvenuto

nah disney ruins everything, look at what it did with the mcu

        • Silhouetters

What, making fun, enjoyable movies that please old school comic fans and newer audiences?
Yeah, terrible what they’ve done, really hateable.

  • The chicken man

I think the whole mutant thing is good and dead anyway. Time for something new.

    • djambi

You shut your damn, mutant-hating mouth.

  • pablitonizer

wow I understand not wanting 2 superhero films to clash but one year ahead looks like a bit of a too much for a film that’s almost done and with a trailer out there… Dimension films is that u?

  • Boonedock Saint

Take your time, do it right, make it good.

    • DoopGremlin

It has nothing to do with the quality of the film. It’s a pure logical move to ensure profit.

      • Boonedock Saint

“An insider who spoke with TheWrap said that the move is being made because the film isn’t scary enough” There are also reports during last week’s test screenings it was just okay nothing special. Guess we will have to see if there are any reshoots or script changes.

        • djambi

I hope if the insider is right, they’re holding it to amp up the scares. I’m all in if they’re going full-on with the horror that just so happens to feature mutants.

        • Nahuel Benvenuto

test screenings mean nothing, is like rotten or imdb scores

  • Mr. Dry

    WHAT. THE. FUCK?

  • Grimphantom
  • garry stirrup

I thought it was going to be a tv series. Didn’t look like movie quality. Hopefully they double down on the scares

  • dukeblues

Maybe everyone is sick of the same crap coming out of Hollywood. Another superhero movie? No thanks

    • J Jett

does this even remotely look like “another superhero movie”? did you even watch the trailer?

  • Silhouetters

    Good.
    Keep that shit away.

    • J Jett

keep it away from what? from who? you aren’t being forced to go see it.

      • Peter Trautman

No he’s not but wheb Fox keeps releasing crappy movie afte crappy movie it will hurt the X-Men brand.

      • Silhouetters

Tired argument, be more original next time. It’s a comic book movie. We will see adverts for it literally everywhere, and it looks like garbage.

  • Marc Hill

WHAT??????????????? this is one of the movies i was MOST looking forward to

  • DukeStKing

Saw the trailer this past Friday. Most everyone laughed. Looked like a crapfest.

    • Grimphantom

pfff did you and Bruce Wayne went together as a couple? Both say crapfest.

      • DukeStKing

We shared a jumbo popcorn. What’s it to ya?

        • Peter Trautman

I agree. The scene where the Thrones chick screams under the shower reminds me off that famous aftershave scream scene from Home Alone

  • Bruce Wayne

That’s a joke, right? Right?? Man, those aren’t good signs. I bet the movie is a total crap-fest.

  • J Jett

    WTF?! well this fucking sucks.

  • RedNeoCon

Trailer looks like PG-13/Sci-Fi channel fucking garbage.

Aside from the characters names, nothing about this says “X-Men” in any fashion.

    • James

Pretty sure that was the point. To do something that wasn’t like the x-men movies.

      • Peter Trautman

Then why try to sit on the license anyway?
If its supposed to have nothing to do with the X-Men why write “X-Men” on it?
Take a Nightmare on Elm Street DVD and write “Spongebob” on it. Same thing.

Had they accepted the deal Feige made em in 2015 they wouldn’t lose the license now.

      • RedNeoCon

Then why give them X-Men character names? Why not just have generic bullshit names then?

        • James

Because it’s still a story about x-men characters? You can use the characters and do something other than a generic superhero team film.

  • buroot

Hmmm, either its bc disney wants to review it or its bad.

    • Peter Trautman

I think both. Maisie Williams was only cast because she’s on Game of Thrones and we saw how well Sophie Turner “acted” in Apocalypse.
Fox never learned this lesson: Acting ability > Status.

  • ChaosHD

Finally an X-Men related project that might of been actually worth watching, and it’s pulled. The irony.

  • James

Well that’s too bad. This actually looked really good.

  • Papa_spoosh

This makes a lot of sense and probably doesn’t mean it’s bad. Its not ready for a February 2018 release so they’re holding it for the following February. Get Out proved that February can be a strong month for horror released last year and in April they have Legion season 2 coming out which is an Xmen horror story and it’s exceptional. Would be a bad idea to oversaturate that market and have the two Compete in he same month.

    • Nahuel Benvenuto

legion is not horror at all, is a decent show but for season 2 they have to get rid of SO MANY MUSICALS and do not let such and open ending, also the protagonist is miscast

      • Papa_spoosh

Well we disagree I guess but to me it is unquestionably horror. There’s plenty of fun and comedy in there but there’s a demon in his head called the shadow king who is a horror villain if inever saw one. There was maybe 20 minutes total of “super hero action” throughout the shows first season… some of season ones episodes contained the best horror on tv and film in 2017

        • J Jett

Papa, you are 100% correct. LEGION most definitely without a doubt has horror elements/tone in it.

      • J Jett

you are insane if you think LEGION does not have horror elements/atmosphere. you either insane or you haven’t watched FX’s tv show LEGION.

  • Jonathan Larsson

I don’t see why they would have to push it forward… Maybe they just don’t want to compete with anticipated blockbuster coming out at around the same time.

  • Simon Allen

Apparently industry gossip had various reasons for the shift .
One is that they don’t want it to clash with other blockbusters released around the same time.
Two is that due to the success of horror last year they are putting more of the horror element into it but the last one is the most worrying and that is that test audiences rated the movie as (and I quote here) “ok” …….oh dear !

    • Barry El Beardo

No film set in the X-men universe is amazing though

      • Simon Allen

At least not since the original trilogy of which i am a very big fan .

        • Barry El Beardo

          Even The Last Stand?
I mean the first is good because we hadn’t had the effects or budget for a superhero film like that before. The second was even better, it improved on the first. But the third is a pure fuck you

          • Simon Allen

I think it was pretty unfairly lambasted …..it’s not so bad and i just LOVE that original cast and it’s the last time we see my beloved Famke properly as Jean .

          • Barry El Beardo

            I LOVE Famke Janssen!!

          • Simon Allen

            She’s Amazing 🙂
If she was 20 years younger she would have made the most fantastic Wonder Woman even though i think Gal does a fine fine job .

          • J Jett

Simon YES!! YES! Famke is a freaking Goddess! she’s amazing!

          • Simon Allen

It’s great to be in sync again isn’t is JJ 🙂 x

          • J Jett

i have to admit, i loved THE LAST STAND. it’s a total mess of a film but it had some of THE best individual character action set pieces out of any of the XMEN films. Jean’s destruction of her house/killing of Xavier was incredible. Angel’s breaking free from the chair/restraints, revealing his beautiful wings and then crashing out the window was excellent. etc. etc.

what sucks is that yes, the individual scenes i mentioned are superb but when put into the actual film it’s just a cluster fuck. LOL. it’s like the writers had these individual character scenes in mind, wrote them for the film and then crammed them into said film even though it was like trying to force a jigsaw puzzle piece into the incorrect place/shape.

          • Simon Allen

Ultimately JJ i also think it stands up to repeat viewing way more than any X-men movie that came after it .
And for me it’s THE Famke movie 🙂 she breaks my heart in it every time .

      • Nahuel Benvenuto

sorry, are you a fan of the terrible mcu? because most x men movies HAVE been amazing

        • You do realize that your opinion is the wildly unpopular one, right? The MCU is the most successful film franchise of all time, the X-Men is like 6th, or something. And okay, money isn’t indicative of quality, we all know that. The MCU films have been SO much more well-received than the X-Men films. It’s almost…ALMOST…safe to say that the MCU is objectively better. Now I know what you’re gonna say, so don’t bother.

The fact of the matter is, the MCU is far from terrible, both in quality and reception. Your opinion that it is “terrible” and that the X-Men films have been “amazing” is your own, and, for the most part, yours alone.

    • Nahuel Benvenuto

      test audiences are retarded

  • Necro

Damn! I could maybe see a week or two or hell maybe a month or two, but damn all the way to 2019! Ok what’s wrong with it?

  • Nahuel Benvenuto

i hope they dont do lots of obvious and terirble reshoots like warner does, and that they dont butcher the movie

  • DJ sTikInsEkT

coz its not cute and cuddly enuff lol
