‘Bad Seed’ Remake Casting Role of “Emma” [Exclusive]

Rob Lowe will be directing and starring in a remake of the classic 1956 Oscar-nominated thriller The Bad Seed for Lifetime.

Lowe will play the father of a young daughter who is the personification of evil.

Bloody Disgusting has learned that casting is well underway for the role of “Emma”. Casting sides suggest she’s a very troubled young Damien-type that’s not at all affected by death and uses intimidation to get what she wants. She has her father, Tim, played by Lowe, wrapped around her pinky. In the scene, Emma discusses the death of her stepmother, which builds to Lowe’s “Tim” asking, “So you took care of it? Is that right, Emma?” She replies: “Someone had to.

From having something to do with a schoolmates “accident” to threatening her babysitter and later, violently thrashing her the back of her father’s car seat when she refuses to see a doctor, it’s a juicy role for any young actress.

Lowe will star as a father who seems to have everything under control. But when a terrible tragedy takes place at his daughter Emma’s school, he is forced to question everything he thought he knew about his beloved girl. He slowly begins to question if Emma’s exemplary behavior is just a façade and whether she played a role in the horrific incident. When more strange things begin to happen, he’s faced with keeping a terrible secret to protect Emma, but ultimately must stop her from striking again.

The parent’s gender is being switched from the ‘56 feature version, explains Deadline, where it was played by Nancy Kelly, as well as from the book and play the movie was based on. Kelly received an Oscar nomination, as did Patty McCormack for her role as the young daughter.

The reimagining of the cult 1956 psychological horror film is penned by Barbara Marshall (Wish Upon) based on a best-selling novel by William March that was adapted to a long-running Broadway play.

Lowe, The Wolper Organization’s Mark Wolper (“Bates Motel”, “Roots”) and Elizabeth Stephen executive produce.

Horror movie fanatic who co-founded Bloody Disgusting in 2001. Producer on Southbound, V/H/S/2/3/94, SiREN, Under the Bed, and A Horrible Way to Die. Chicago-based. Filming is underway on The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man for Universal and Blumhouse, which will be howling its way into theaters on January 17, 2025.

Deadline reports that Matilda Firth (Disenchanted) is the latest actor to sign on, joining Christopher Abbott (Poor Things),  Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel), and Sam Jaeger.

The project will mark Whannell’s second monster movie and fourth directing collaboration with Blumhouse Productions (The Invisible Man, Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3).

Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott as a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.

Writers include Whannell & Corbett Tuck as well as Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo.

Jason Blum is producing the film. Ryan Gosling, Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner and Whannell are executive producers. Wolf Man is a Blumhouse and Motel Movies production.

In the wake of the failed Dark Universe, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man has been the only real success story for the Universal Monsters brand, which has been struggling with recent box office flops including the comedic Renfield and period horror movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Giving him the keys to the castle once more seems like a wise idea, to say the least.
