‘Annihilation’ Director Alex Garland Wants to Make ‘Swamp Thing’ Movie

Published

on

Alex Garland has had one hell of a career since bursting onto the scene thanks to Danny Boyle’s The Beach, an adaptation of Garland’s novel. Garland subsequently went on to write 28 Days Later, Sunshine and Dredd, and he made his directorial debut with the Oscar-nominated Ex Machina. Up next, he unleashes total Annihilation.

In promotion of Annihilation, Garland took part in a Reddit AMA over the weekend, where he was asked which comic book character he’d most want to write/direct.

Garland’s response? Swamp Thing. To which we say, YES PLEASE!

“The Swamp Thing (Dr. Alec Holland) is a fictional character and antihero in comic books published by DC Comics. He is a humanoid/plant elemental creature, created by writer Len Wein and artist Bernie Wrightson. Swamp Thing has had several humanoid or monster incarnations in various different storylines.

He first appeared in House of Secrets #92 (July 1971) in a stand-alone horror story set in the early 20th century. The character then returned in a solo series, set in the contemporary world and in the general DC continuity. The character is a swamp monster that resembles an anthropomorphic mound of vegetable matter. He fights to protect his swamp home, the environment in general, and humanity from various supernatural or terrorist threats.”

Swamp Thing made the leap to the big screen in the 1982 feature film, directed by Wes Craven, and was recently set to appear in a potential Justice League Dark film.

Writer in the horror community since 2008. Editor in Chief of Bloody Disgusting. Owns Eli Roth's prop corpse from Piranha 3D. Has four awesome cats. Still plays with toys.

Up next from Ryuhei Kitamura? Deadline reports that he’ll be directing Thrill Ride, which sounds a bit like the best parts of Final Destination 3… expanded into a feature film!

Deadline details, “the English-language film will tell the story of a group of people, including two young women, who are trapped upside down on a roller coaster taken over by a mysterious saboteur threatening to drop them all one-by-one to their deaths.”

Film Bridge International is launching the project for sales ahead of the Cannes market.

Chad Law and Christopher Jolley wrote the screenplay.

Thrill Ride is exactly the type of high-concept based thriller that our customers are looking for in the marketplace,” said Film Bridge’s Ellen Wander and Jordan Dykstra. “With Ryuhei at the helm, we know his vision and execution will deliver thrills of the highest quality.”

“As a hardcore rollercoaster fan since I was young, I immediately fell in love with this script filled with suspense, action, crazy ups and downs, turns, loops, and corkscrews at maximum speed,” adds Kitamura. “I can’t wait to get on a ride and bring life to the wildest rollercoaster imaginable.”
