Surprise! ‘Insidious: The Last Key’ Is the Highest Grossing ‘Insidious’ Film!

Published

Horror. Is. Hot.

Between Split, Get Out, and IT, our genre absolutely decimated the box office in 2017. Proof that this wasn’t just an anomaly was in the success of Jigsaw, the eighth Saw film that performed way better than expected. The question became, would this trend continue in 2018? Yup.

How about this one…

The Adam Robitel-directed Insidious: The Last Key is officially the highest grossing Insidious film in the entire franchise. Yes, even more than James Wan‘s 2011 indie that grossed $97 million at the box office worldwide. In fact, The Last Key is pushing against diminishing returns by topping all of the Insidious films with a $164,365,832 worldwide take as of this writing. Thanks to Francesco for pointing this out to us.

Here’s a breakdown:

  • Insidious: The Last Key (2018) — $164.4M
  • Insidious Chapter 2 (2013) — $161.9M
  • Insidious Chapter 3 (2015) — $113.0M
  • Insidious (2011) — $97.0M

The fourth film in the franchise is a prequel that recounts the origins of parapsychologist Elise Rainier, played by Lin Shaye. A fifth Insidious is happening, sources tell Bloody Disgusting, and that it’s unlikely to be another prequel.

Filming is underway on The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man for Universal and Blumhouse, which will be howling its way into theaters on January 17, 2025.

Deadline reports that Matilda Firth (Disenchanted) is the latest actor to sign on, joining Christopher Abbott (Poor Things),  Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel), and Sam Jaeger.

The project will mark Whannell’s second monster movie and fourth directing collaboration with Blumhouse Productions (The Invisible Man, Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3).

Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott as a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.

Writers include Whannell & Corbett Tuck as well as Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo.

Jason Blum is producing the film. Ryan Gosling, Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner and Whannell are executive producers. Wolf Man is a Blumhouse and Motel Movies production.

In the wake of the failed Dark Universe, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man has been the only real success story for the Universal Monsters brand, which has been struggling with recent box office flops including the comedic Renfield and period horror movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Giving him the keys to the castle once more seems like a wise idea, to say the least.
