Lloyd Kaufman Clarifies That No, James Gunn Isn’t Working on ‘Toxic Avenger 5’

Toxic Avenger remake

As we told you earlier this week, Lloyd Kaufman is still actively working on Toxic Avenger 5, which will be the first new installment in the franchise in twenty years. The latest info on the film came courtesy of a new chat SFX Magazine had with Troma’s founder, with Kaufman noting that the script is ambitious and the best one yet.

Kaufman told the mag, “The script is complete and it will focus on Toxie’s two children who, 20 years after part four, have all grown up. And one has mutated into a very strange being [laughs]. Fans can expect more low-budget action with the usual Troma mix of girls, guts and gruesome gore. Toxie is going to go to Chernobyl in this one.”

In the same interview, Kaufman mentioned James Gunn, who of course got his start writing for Troma. That quote has since taken on a new life, with various websites reporting that James Gunn has actually been working on the script with Kaufman. Taking to social media yesterday, Kaufman clarified that no, that’s simply not true.

There is a big error online!” Kaufman tweeted. “As much as Toxie and I love him and would LOVE to have James Gunn work on Toxie 5, this is NOT true! Unless James is planning to surprise Uncle Lloydie, this is #fakenews!

Sorry, folks!
