Writer Rhett Reese Shoots Down Today’s ‘Zombieland 2’ Rumors

Horror Sequels

Well, today sure has been an interesting one on the Zombieland front. This morning, news of a Long Beach, California screening of a film allegedly titled Zombieland 2: Double Tap surfaced, with the site Splash Report noting that the screening was taking place this Thursday. Later in the day, Edwards Long Beach Stadium 26 cancelled the screening.

We even tracked down eBay auctions for tickets to that very screening! Odd, right?

Unfortunately, it seems the reality is that Zombieland 2 has *not* been filmed in secret, as Zombieland co-writer Rhett Reese has taken to Twitter to shut down the rumors.

Reese tweeted tonight…

“The stories that a Zombieland sequel is in the can are as fake as fake news gets. Sorry, guys.”

We have no idea what the planned (then cancelled) Thursday night screening was all about, but it’s looking like it was one big false alarm. A bummer, to be sure, but the good news is that Reese and Zombieland co-writer Paul Wernick are indeed developing a sequel to the 2009 film, which they hope to have in theaters come October 2019.

If/when Zombieland 2 does indeed ever come to fruition, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, and Abigail Breslin will all likely return.

In addition to Leigh Whannell’s upcoming Universal Monsters movie Wolf Man, Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel) has also joined the cast of Weapons, THR has announced tonight.

Weapons is the new horror movie from New Line Cinema and director Zach Cregger (Barbarian), with Julia Garner joining the previously announced Josh Brolin (Dune 2).

The upcoming Weapons is from writer/director Zach Cregger, who will also produce alongside his Barbarian producing team: Roy Lee of Vertigo and J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures. Vertigo’s Miri Yoon also produces.

The Hollywood Reporter teases, “Plot details for Weapons are being kept holstered but it is described as a multi and inter-related story horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia, the 1999 actor-crammed showcase from filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.”

Cregger was a founding member and writer for the New York comedy troupe “The Whitest Kids U’Know,” which he started while attending The School of Visual Arts. The award-winning group’s self-titled sketch comedy show ran for five seasons on IFC-TV and Fuse. He was also a series regular on Jimmy Fallon’s NBC series “Guys with Kids” and the TBS hit series “Wrecked,” and was featured in a recurring role on the NBC series “About a Boy.”

Weapons will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
