Indie Horror: Brookshire’s ‘Awaken the Dead’

As much as we love pimping indie horror films to you, it’s really hard to A: pick which ones and B: find the time to do that and mainstream horror at the same time. Today we were emailed about an indie zombie pic entitled Awaken the Dead, which was directed by Jeff Brookshire. A hybrid, ‘Dead’ is a zombie film that is equal parts espionage drama, dark comedy, and alternative action. Two lost souls must band together as a virus infects the world around them. Christopher, a former killer turned priest battles his own inner demons while Mary, a spirited recluse, battles the world. Thrown together, neither knows what brought them there or what is changing the neighborhood around them. Read on for some pics and a link to the website, where you can watch the trailer… READ MORE

Say a Prayer… Is the Best Story EVER Coming to HBO?

Anyone who knows me knows that my favorite story of all time is Garth Ennis’ comic book series The Preacher, which was supposed to be filming this past month with James Marsden (Cyclops) set to star as Jesse. As excited as I was, I didn’t like the idea of the original story being constricted by society and all of the studios ability to fold under pressure- in the end I think a movie would have stunk. But what I have just read over at AICN would easily be the single best thing for this amazing story. Can you say HBO series?! Fuck yeah!!! Read on for the skinny. The story follows an ex-clergyman (Jesse) who becomes possessed by an angel-demon creature with God-like powers. He becomes disgusted with God’s abandoning of His responsibilities. So Jesse starts off into the wilds of Texas with his hitman girlfriend and new best friend (a vampire) to find God so that he can give Him a piece of his mind…

Celluloid Nightmares Remakes ‘Funny Games’

Paris-based sales powerhouse Celluloid Dreams is launching a new specialty label for high-end horror, underlining the surge in interest in the genre, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Celluloid Nightmares is billed as a showcase for “quality films that also deliver chills.” The initial lineup includes the recently signed English-language remake of Michael Haneke’s Funny Games, starring Naomi Watts and produced by Tartan films, Halcyon Pictures and Celluloid Dreams. “Other independent sellers have started these divisions, but in our case the intention is to continue the quality and prestige that have always distinguished Celluloid movies,” said Celluloid Dreams chief Hengameh Panahi. “Haneke’s remake will set the bar.” In the original two psychotic young men take a mother, father, and son hostage in their vacation cabin and force them to play sadistic “games” with one another for their own amusement. Other pics under the new banner include an Austrian slasher pic Dead in Three Days from helmer Andreas Prochaska and George Ratliff’s psycho-drama Joshua.

Feed (V)

Brett Leonard (Lawnmower Man), who recently directed the embarrassing adaptation of Marvel’s ‘Man-Thing,’ has officially redeemed himself with his latest film ‘Feed’, which has been playing at festivals all over the world for the past year or so. This grotesque vision will be making its way to DVD later this year thanks to VVS Films.

‘Feed’ is a disgusting and revolting reflection on America’s obsession over beauty. The film takes a stand and challenges audiences into making a hard decision—who do they root for?

While policing the underbelly of the internet, Phillip (Patrick Thompson) – a hot shot cyber crime investigator, finds a suspicious website for Feeders & Gainers – the weird world of fat erotica; a sexual subculture where fat–admiring men seek out obese women. But one of these men may be going too far – feeding his charges to death and publishing details online.

Shifting back and forth and keeping the viewer guessing, it’s really difficult to figure out if Michael Carter (Alex O’Loughlin) is really a bad dude…that is until the end. Mid way through the film O’Loughlin delivers one hell of a monologue after drugging Thompson’s character. During the monologue he brings up so many great points about what he is doing that you can help but ask, is he for real or just making excuses to justify his evil ways?

Up until the final act I found myself cheering for the bad guy and wondering why this idiotic cop was still trespassing out of his jurisdiction. Kieran Galvin does a fantastic job of taking these unexplainable events and making sense out of them by the finale. Each character has a very deep and disturbed past, which reflects who they are in the movie. In addition, each character has their own desires, but what separates them is how far they take them.

The film is edited together beautifully with a gorgeous look by cinematographer Steve Arnold. The score features some really cheerful ‘50s and ‘60s tunes played over some really messed up imagery. ‘Feed’ is a visceral treat to say the least.

But what horror fans really want to know is how much blood, scares and insanity is there? As for the blood you’ll be sad to know there’s not much until the finale, and even then it’s mostly grisly aftermath (with a few bones thrown in). What we do get is gallons of disgusting human fat being stewed, boiled and poured all over the place, along with the remains of numerous victims. And scares? I can’t think of anything more terrifying than an angry 600 pound woman with vomit all over her chest screaming violently at the top of her lungs—can you?

Aside from the idiotic screenplay decisions that didn’t make any sense (why is the cop having such a hard time getting on the website when there are hundreds of registered regular visitors) and the hammy acting at points, ‘Feed’ held my interest from start to finish, which is becoming increasingly rare in my day and age. And just when I thought the ending was going to be a joke, they spun it on me. Without giving anything away, the climax is well worth the wait and the epilogue leaves you with a great taste in your mouth… if you can still eat after watching the film. A definite must see when available later this year, ‘Feed’ is one hell of a tasty treat.

Horror Takes Over Cannes Film Festival

Here’s a little taste of what’s going on horrorwise at this year’s Cannes. Like a B-movie monster that just won’t die, the horror genre is more visible than ever at the Festival de Cannes and its parallel market, where insiders say there are more scare pictures being shopped than there have been for years, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Two films that loosely fit into the horror genre are screening in the various selections — Re-Cycle, from Oxide and Danny Pang in Un Certain Regard, and Bong Joon-Ho’s The Host in Directors’ Fortnight. And word is that Cannes selectors were keen to include Alexandre Aja’s remake of The Hills Have Eyes too but shied off because already had been released in too many territories. A walk about the market reveals literally dozens of films being sold or looking for investors. Some of the names sound like a punch line from a sick joke, but such films as Living Hell, The Quick and the Undead, The Demon Child and even The Night of the Living Dorks and Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead are part of the fast-growing and often highly profitable sector.
