Joe Lynch Whisking Salma Hayek To Serbia For ‘Everly’!

Salma Hayek (Savages, The Faculty, From Dusk Till Dawn) is set to star in Joe Lynch’s actioner Everly, the new project from Adam Ripp and Rob Paris’s Crime Scene Pictures shingle.

Hayek will star as a down-on-her-luck woman, stuck in her apartment, who must fend off waves of assassins sent by her ex, a dangerous mob boss. She’ll be replacing Kate Hudson, who had previously been earmarked for the role. Yale Hannon penned the script, which was featured on the Hollywood Black List.

The film shoots in Belgrade, Serbia this summer. I’m quite glad Lynch (Wrong Turn 2) is working on a new feature while all of the business malarky around Knights Of Badassdom (hopefully) gets sorted out. Everly apparently takes place in one room, I’m not sure why that room needs to be in Serbia – but I’m speaking with Lynch soon and will find out.

‘The Wicker Man’ Director Hunts Rare Footage For 40th Anniversary!

Director Robin Hardy has endorsed a worldwide appeal launched by StudioCanal to locate original film materials relating to the 1973 cult horror classic The Wicker Man.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the film about a policeman (Edward Woodward) sent to a remote island village in search of a missing girl, whom the townsfolk claim never existed. It also stars Christopher Lee.

StudioCanal intends to mark the occasion by releasing the “most complete version of the film possible”.

The Wicker Man was originally released with minimal promotion as the second feature in a double bill with Don’t Look Now.

The version exhibited to audiences was significantly shorter (88mins) than Hardy’s original vision (102mins)!

The negatives disappeared from storage at Shepperton Studios and were allegedly used as landfill in the construction of the nearby M4 motorway. READ MORE

Yesterday I hopped on the phone with one of the film’s stars, Brodus Clay, who also happens to be a wildly successful WWE wrestler. We talked about his role in the film, his love of practical effects and how film work compares to wrestling.

[BD Review] ‘Aftershock’ Rattles and Fizzles

I caught Nicolas Lopez’s Aftershock after it world premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last September, and wasn’t a fan. Since then, critics seem to be having fun with it, so I sent Bloody’s Evan Dickson in without warning to see if he could survive the violent Eli Roth-produced thriller. While he did enjoy it on some level, he seemed to tip the sale more in the Richter negative direction.

There’s a lot to like in the film, but I can’t recommend it as a complete work. It has a lot of great components, but it seems oddly intent on sabotaging itself with elements that just don’t belong within its tonal landscape,” says Dickson in his review. “That’s not to say that there still aren’t things to enjoy in Aftershock, there are…[still, it's] something I wanted to love became something I found myself trying to like.

The film takes place in Chile, where an American tourist’s vacation goes from good to great when he meets some beautiful women travellers. But when an earthquake ravages the underground nightclub they are in, a fun night quickly turns to terror. Escaping to the surface is just the beginning as they face the nightmarish chaos above ground. READ MORE

[TV] ABC’s “Gothica” Pilot Not Picked Up

ABC has decided not to pick up their “Gothica” pilot, which starred Amityville Horror, Turistas, 30 Days of Night‘s Melissa George, pictured, and Janet Montgomery.

Set in the present day, the project, created by Matt Lopez, weaves together a mythology that incorporates the legends of Dracula, Jekyll and Hyde, Frankenstein and Dorian Gray. It centers on journalist Grace Van Helsing (Janet Montgomery) who takes over her family’s hometown newspaper.

George was to play Fiona Hunter, the series’ most formidable force, and everyone – from Grace, to Dorian (Chris Egan), to Victor Frankenstein (Tom Ellis) – would find their mettle and savvy tested by this deliciously cunning woman.

Incredible Concept Art For Wes Ball’s ‘The Maze Runner’

While director Wes Ball’s adaptation of James Dashner’s novel The Maze Runner doesn’t hit until February 14, 2014, the director shared some pretty astounding concept art he used for inspiration. He also shared an animated short film, both available below.

Dylan O’Brien, Jacob Latimore, Will Poulter, Kaya Scodelario, Aml Ameen, Blake Cooper, and Thomas Brodie-Sangster all star in Maze Runner.

Here’s Amazon’s description: “When Thomas wakes up in the lift, the only thing he can remember is his first name. His memory is blank. But he’s not alone. When the lift’s doors open, Thomas finds himself

surrounded by kids who welcome him to the Glade—a large, open expanse surrounded by stone walls.

Just like Thomas, the Gladers don’t know why or how they got to the Glade. All they know is that every morning the stone doors to the maze that surrounds them have opened. Every night they’ve closed tight. And every 30 days a new boy has been delivered in the lift.

Thomas was expected. But the next day, a girl is sent up—the first girl to ever arrive in the Glade. And more surprising yet is the message she delivers.

Thomas might be more important than he could ever guess. If only he could unlock the dark secrets buried within his mind.

[BD Review] ‘Aftershock’ Is Fun… Until It Isn’t

Aftershock is a weird movie in the sense that I honestly don’t know how I feel about it. There’s a lot to like in the film, but I can’t recommend it as a complete work. It has a lot of great components, but it seems oddly intent on sabotaging itself with elements that just don’t belong within its tonal landscape (though I may be taking a bit of a leap by stating that I even know what the intended tone is).

The film, directed by Nicolas Lopez from a script he wrote with Eli Roth and Guillermo Amoedo, begins firmly in Hostel territory, introducing us to the main characters in an extended first act. I can sort of see what they’re going for in these first 40 or so minutes – they obviously want us to invest in these guys. Gringo (Roth) is reeling from a divorce and misses his daughter, rich horndog (Pollo) is out to get laid, and ineffectual Ariel (Ariel Levy) is always on the verge of texting a recent ex who is no good for him.

While the film certainly does a thorough job establishing these characters and the conflicts/dynamics that fuel their relationship, it’s to the detriment of the overall experience. We’re given reasons to root for their survival that should work on paper, but spending so much time with them almost negates it. I’m not sure if the decision was to take a This Is 40 approach to the Hostel formula, but this section of the film plays more like Sideways sans actual human insight. By the time they meet up with their female counterparts Kylie (Lorenza Izzo), Irina (Natasha Yarovenko) and Monica (Andrea Osvárt) we’re ready for some sh*t to start shaking.

And so it does. A massive earthquake strikes Chile and the underground nightclub in which they’e partying is decimated. Soon enough, the gang (more or less) is out on the streets where it becomes evident that humanity itself is the real threat. It’s here that Aftershock really takes off, and boy does it swing for the fences. Lots of blood, lots of tension, lots of batsh*t decisions that pay off admirably, a cable car sequence that had me on the edge of my seat… it’s all good deal of fun. Until it isn’t.

Even during the roller-coaster ride that is the film’s second half, there are some insurmountable tonal miscalculations. The most severe of these is the repeated rape of a young mother at the hands of a local gang. The first time she’s raped goes by fairly quickly; it’s upsetting and unwelcome but you can almost block it out. Then comes the second rape – which is fairly protracted. In fact, the camera lingers on this event for so long I’m not sure what the aim is. Is it suspense? Maybe? One of our heroes is stalking up on the offender after all, and we’re hoping he’ll put an end to it. But, then again, he stalks up so slowly you begin to suspect that the film is actually disregarding his character’s natural motivations in order to showcase the assault at hand.

It comes down to one thing – this moment (along with several others) just isn’t fun. I’m not making any moral judgements on it. I don’t feel any differently about the filmmakers as people. I just don’t want to watch this scene – not in this movie. You can have your gory/fun Irwin Allen inspired romp. You can have a movie that addresses the horrors of sexual assault. I’m just not sure that they can be the same movie. And it’s not just this scene, there are other moments peppered throughout the film that attach themselves like parasites and leech a good deal of the joy out of it.

That’s not to say that there still aren’t things to enjoy in Aftershock, there are. The last shot in particular made me so giddy I almost forgot why I wanted to stop watching the movie entirely just 20 minutes earlier. Aftershock really is that uneven. If they could bottle the feeling I got from the last 30 seconds of this movie I’d be shouting about it from the rooftops. But they didn’t, and something I wanted to love became something I found myself trying to like.

5 Questions With ‘The Last Will And Testament Of Rosalind Leigh’ Director Rodrigo Gudino

Rodrigo Gudino‘s The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh, stars Aaron Poole and Academy Award winner Vanessa Redgrave, is the epitome of a slow burn movie. Taking place in largely one location, it’s a haunting (literally) tale of a mother and son being divided even in the afterlife.

I recently hopped on the phone with Gudino to talk about the film’s inception, how he found the house it takes place in (which is a character unto itself) and the coup of landing Vanessa Redgrave for the project.

The film centers on an antiques collector who inherits a house from his estranged mother only to discover that she had been living in a shrine devoted to a mysterious cult of angels. As night falls, he comes to suspect that his mother’s oppressive spirit still lingers within her home and is using items in the house – especially the statues of angels – to contact him with an urgent message.

The film hits Canadian cinemas today. Head inside for the interview! READ MORE

First Clip Offers Uncomfortable Taste Of ‘We Are What We Are’!

After premiering to mixed review out of the Sundance Film Festival (I liked it), Stake Land director Jim Mickle’s We Are What We Are remake is heading to the Cannes market. With that, the sales agents have released the first ever footage from the cannibal flick starring Julia Garner, Bill Sage, Wyatt Russell, and Ambyr Childers.

In it we get a taste – pun intended – of the family of cannibals. They’re enjoying soup in an extremely unsettling setting.

A seemingly wholesome and benevolent family, the Parkers have always kept to themselves, and for good reason. Behind closed doors, patriarch Frank rules the roost with a rigorous fervor, determined to keep his ancestral customs intact at any cost. As a torrential rainstorm moves into the area, tragedy strikes and his daughters Iris and Rose are forced to assume responsibilities that extend beyond those of a typical family. The most important task the girls face is putting meat on the table— but not the kind that can be found at the local supermarket. As the unrelenting downpour continues to flood their small town, local authorities begin to uncover clues that bring them closer to the secret that the Parkers have held closely for so many years.READ MORE

DeInstitutionalized LLC has released the first poster for their horror thriller A House Is Not a Home. This horror title was shot in Simi Valley, California, during December of 2012. The film notably stars Gerald Webb (Layover, “True Blood”), Bill Cobbs (Night at the Museum), Eddie Steeples (“My Name is Earl”) and Richard Grieco (“21 Jump Street”).
