‘Akira’ Has Never Been So Awesome

The 1988 Manga adaptation of Akira is one of the greatest animated movies of all time. It’s stood the test of time and desperately needs a live-action adaptation as well (too bad Ghost in the Shell may have put a plug in it once again). The animation itself is stunning, with the film being jam-packed with hardcore action, violence, and Cronenberg-esque insanity.

One of the reasons I love the internet is that it’s fuel for creativity; good or bad it’s breeding artistic individuals who are going to be our entertainers for the next decade. Take this fan video, for example. Using footage from Akira, a user on reddit shared his music video for Perturbator’s excellent “Humans Are Such Easy Prey” off their 2014 album Dangerous Days. The end result is pure adrenaline…

This is how you kick off the week!

I just discovered this video last week, and haven’t stopped watching it; now here’s a bloody Disgusting article featuring that very same video. Weird.

Heartily disagree about it needing to be remade in a live action format. It is a masterpiece, which means LEAVE IT THE FUCK ALONE. Doing a live action version will only be a fucking trainwreck. Go back and watch the original anime classic if you like it so much. If you think it needs to be made into a live-action film, then you clearly don’t appreciate Akira nearly as much as you think you do.

Maybe try not to speak for everyone? I love Akira, and would wholeheartedly welcome a WELL MADE live action adaptation.

I was not representing any opinion other than my own, sorry for the confusion.

The movie Akira wouldn’t exist, if someone said, “This Manga is perfect. We should never touch it.”

Maybe we shouldn’t call what we want “adaptations.” Maybe “translations” would be a better name. Like translating the language, but not changing the plot. Change the format, not the concept.

      They’ll fuck it up

Years ago someone combined Radiohead’s “Exit Music For A Film” to scenes from this classic. Very effective.
    This is cool too.

I’ve never seen Akira, but this video made me damn interested. Im going to look for the actual movie.

      You’ll be glad you did.

once you see it you’ll life will forever be changed.

Hey, Hollywood. When you finally get around to adapting Akira, please, just adapt the damn movie/manga. Don’t shove any random crap in there, just to get it to “do better in America.” Tetsuo and Kaneda don’t need to be brothers. Tetsuo doesn’t need to be part of the experiment the whole time and just allowed to live with the Capsules because ???????. Kaneda doesn’t need to be working at the Japan Self-Defense Force or is part of the scientific scene. If you really, really need more material, pull it from the Manga or just flesh out the characters better. Don’t fall back on Tropes we got tired of before Akira even came out. I don’t give a crap what color you make the cast, just don’t go ruining the script with your tired hack bullshit.

There’s no need for a live action version. None at all.

    • zombie84_41

I’m with you on that. Hollywood will fuck it up. It needs to go the indie route or kick start it with some fans.

When Akira was made, the manga still wasn’t finished. I love to see a trilogy adapting the six volumes, and get the full scope of Akira. Ghost in the shell could have been interesting if they look at the manga, tons of material there, instead of a rehash of the anime movie.

    • zombie84_41

I agree with you here but it can’t be done. It just needs to be left alone because it will be fucked up. Unless you get some of the worlds best writers, special effects team, director, actors, to pull it off. I might be one of the few who actually really liked that ghost in the shell movie that came out. Just because I haven’t seen a cyberpunk movie in years and years on the big screen.Or Actually ever for that matter.
