SpookyDan writes in this morning, “This morning when I woke up I found that my favorite TV channel MonstersHD is missing from my TV. When I searched around for it, I also found that ALL of the VOOM HD networks channels are missing. It seems that Dish Networks has pulled the plug. This is very frustrating as its not just one show that was cancelled… it’s a whole collection of channels and shows that are gone!” What happened? Spooky investigates, read on for the skinny…
No one is talking as there is a lawsuit involved in regards to the changing payment plans at Dish Networks. My connection at MonstersHD says that “The MonstersHD channel is not dead. It IS still on the air, just not at Dish Networks.”
Dish Networks are not talking as they issued me a generic response about a new channel lineup stating “In order to launch 22 of the most popular HD channels we replaced some of our lower rated HD programming. DISH Network continues to provide the best HD experience for our customers, and in doing so, we constantly listen to our customers and evaluate the channel line ups within our HD packages. At times, this requires us to replace the lower performing channels in order to provide room to expand our HD channel lineup with brand new channels. We replaced these channels because they offered repeat programming with low valued content.”
The Voom spokesman said this “EchoStar’s decision to drop the Voom channels is unjustified and, we believe, is a violation of our distribution agreement. We are intent on enforcing our legal rights in court. Because the litigation is ongoing, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”
Where does that leave the horror fans? It makes no sense to me that a comedy channel, a few golfing channels and 200 DIY channels exist, yet we as horror fans cannot unify enough support to have just one channel that makes sense. Even Monsters HD was playing the repeat game and just showing the same dozen or so movies all month long. Why cant horror fans get a break? We are decidedly lucky when it comes to websites and magazines, but as a fan it gets frustrating to find a lack of support in other media outlets.
Here is the current state of Horror TV.
Chiller TV: offered by NBC, filled with horror reruns, a fun fan film contest, little to no original programming, and a zillion lame commercials. There are plans for the channel to go HD soon, but no date announced yet. Chiller has potential, but corporate BS is holding the channel back by not supporting it with funding for original programming.
FearNet: Comcast’s VOD channel. The problem with Fearnet is that they are not available everywhere, just in the Midwest and that they are not a “real” TV channel.
A handful of online providers are working towards a launch like ScreamTV, and others but no one is stepping up to the plate yet with an aggressive enough campaign.
I personally hope to see this all change very soon!
