J.J. Abrams to Pass on 'Cloverfield' Sequel?!
Friday, May 16, 2008

J.J. Abrams, co-producer of the hit monster film Cloverfield, tells Sci Fi Wire that a sequel may or may not happen and revealed that he's more inclined to do something [different] with his Cloverfield partners, writer Drew Goddard and director Matt Reeves, other than a follow-up. "We're talking about it," Abrams said of Cloverfield 2. "But the truth is there's another idea that I'd rather do with the same people than do a sequel. It's a whole new thing." Abrams added, "So my dream is to work with [Goddard and Reeves] again, but do something that's [new]. Having said that, Drew and Matt both, separately, have really good ideas for what [Cloverfield 2] could be. So I don't know. We'll see. I know the studio wants it." Well how much would that SUCK?!

So he's assuming he's either not going to get a chance to work with these two guys again after his next project or he just has apprehensions about doing a sequel to his biggest film. Either way, it feels like a waste that they started a viral campaign for a sequel that they no intention of making. Considering how much time Abrams has spent talking about where to go with the sequel, the only thing he'd ultimately be doing here if he opted to not make a sequel at all would be to piss off the fans of the original.

Thank You! That is the best news I have heard all day. Maybe he can start work on ruining "The Dark Tower" series and I can get pissed at that asshole all over again.

Shit, I'm a sad panda after hearing this news. But like Disanti said maybe he can start working The Dark Tower. Hopefully it will be for HBO or Showtime. I'm thinking like a 40 part mini series.

i'd love to have them do a really good sequel. although it should be shot somewhat differently (IMO) than the first. maybe a combination of handheld & regular format camera shots.

Ya, I'm a sad Panda too.

Interesting how he kept talking about the monster in Cloverfield as trying to make it "iconic" and memorable...basically a Godzilla for America. Yet he's finished with just one movie, and we only got to see MAYBE ten seconds of the monster in said movie...yeah...that's sure iconic! Though I enjoyed Cloverfield, I find it more forgettable than what he was aiming for.

And why can't he do a sequel and something new? I just want more giant monster movies and these guys seem to be good at it.

Puh-leeezzzz! MAKE THE SEQUEL! There is still sooooooooo much buzz amongst all the hardcore Cloverfield fans out there that it's hard to imagine everyone left hanging. I loved JJ Abrams idea about creating America's Own Iconic Giant Monster, and I really think people would flock to future installments given the chance. Modern horror needs one really good, timeless, memorable monster -- and that monster is Clovie. Long live CLOVIE!

Seriously, the idea of no Cloverfield sequel is absurd! I just can't believe this news! Talk about feeling disheartened... !

My biggest trouble with Cloverfield was that everyone in the movie was 24 years old, super rich, beautiful, and super sensitive to everyone around them. And that right there is what put the big "fake" curse on the movie. I actually found the giant monster to be more believable than the people. A sequel will almost assuredly give us more of the same kind of cast, a story even less compelling than the first, and a monster whose appearance we're no longer curious about because we already know what it looks like.

the movies is over rated but the past clues is another monter and i believe is that and is ''other'' movie for him and please end lost because if the series continue like now is gona be cancelled also i believe the team doing the series read the blogs and the coments of the people and based in that they star to write

As some have pointed out, there will be a sequel whether Abrams is involved or not. Too much money was made with the first film. And I'm with ultrazilla... Abrams went on and on about "a Godzilla for America" before CLOVERFIELD came out, but he clearly doesn't understand what that means if he intends to end the franchise with one film. As great as the original GOJIRA is, Godzilla himself is an icon because he keeps coming back.

i agree w/ jkrouskop. there's NO way Paramount isn't going to do a sequel to Cloverfield w/ or w/out Abrams' involvement. it made too much money for them to ignore. plus they know how much fans (like myself) are dying for another film.

And the biggest reason that no Cloverfield sequel equals some serious fan-torture? Because we were all baited and teased with the notion that this monster was ONLY THE BABY! Talk about leaving everyone with a case of some serious cinematic blue balls... ! There's not a single satisfied ticket/DVD buyer out there who isn't champing at the bit to see what kind of chaos Momma can dish out. So please, JJ... don't leave us hanging like this! For the love of mercy, give the fans what they deserve, already!

I would like one more.... hey if not we could wait fuckin 4 yrs for some lame ass production company to make one like there doing with Darko... WTF

Of course, all of this consternation could be alleviated if some American studio would just erase the mistake that was Sony's GODZILLA by optioning the property and making a proper, big budget Godzilla film. For that matter, if Toho would just quit sitting on their hands and start prepping a new film of their own... perhaps a remake of the original, set in modern day, against a backdrop of nuclear proliferation and terrorism.

Abrams is a douche bag, wanting to something new like what, a Star Trek movie?

First off..fuck JJ Abrams. Fuckin assholes act like hes up there with Frances Ford. He didnt even "direct" the first on assholes. His name doesnt have to be attactched to be good. IN fact the first one was kindda lame. \ So enough of this shit. As far as this goes he wasnt really attatched to the first one. Name one flick besides M.I.3 and Star Trek this fuck directed.

Cloverfield doesn't even belong in the same sentance as Godzilla. Not to mention I'd take man-in-suit over cgi monster anyday. As silly as it looks, it just seems right. Aren't Trey parker and Matt Stong making a man-in-suit monster movie? If they do it will kick ass...those guys are way better than JJ Abrams at, well, everything.

creepmasterx9000
8:24pm, May 17, 2008

Another thing: I can't believe that some lame ass franchise like Saw continues to limp on -- creatively speaking -- when there's sooooooo much more obvious potential in Cloverfield. I mean, come on! It doesn't take much imagination to see that this thing could go in a million different directions. And the fact that the online community spends so much time deciphering clues and wondering about what lies ahead only makes the prospect of a sequel (or several of them) that much more of a no-brainer. The whole Cloverfield phenomena just has P-O-T-E-N-T-I-A-L written all over it!

He needs to make "The Dark Tower" movies.
