It’s weird to me that these “modern day” retellings of classic flicks hasn’t really kicked into high gear yet. There have been numerous adaptations of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland” in the works, but none of them have come into fruition. One on the slate that appears to finally be going is Malice in Wonderland (originally titled Malice in Sunderland), which Sony has acquired for distribution. Today a lead has been cast and more details can be found inside.
Screen Daily reports that Spain’s 6Sales has secured leading territories for Simon Fellows’ Malice In Wonderland, which is set to go into production with Danny Dyer (Severance) and Mischa Barton in the lead roles.
Marina Fuentes of 6Sales has sold the film to Sony UK for the United Kingdom, Quality for all of Latin America, Paradise for CIS, Shooting Stars for the Middle East and D Productions for Romania and Turkey.
Described as a modern twist on the children’s classic Alice In Wonderland, Malice is being produced by Mark Williams at Pierce Williams and Albert Martinez Martin of Future Films. Executive producers are Michael Pierce of Pierce Williams, and Stephen Margolis and Carola Ash of Future Films.
Fuentes says: “Future Films and Pierce Williams couldn’t have chosen a better team to translate this terrific script into a smart entertaining film. We are thrilled with the presales done so far which demonstrate the film’s marketability.”
The film is set to begin principal photography in the UK next month.
