Portman to Topline ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’?

While Production Weekly reported this evening that Natalie Portman (V for Vendetta) is now attached to Seth Grahame-Smith’s novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies – Jane Austen’s novel with bone crunching zombie action – a source at website Shocktillyoudrop is reporting this information is premature. “Premature. No offers or handshakes of any kind yet – other people circling,” reports their unnamed source. Austen fans are in for a shock, with heroine Elizabeth Bennet and her four sisters becoming zombie slayers and taught how to fight like Japanese ninjas by Mr Darcy. The project was first announced here last week.

    Consider that UK TV series rumor squashed to the bone as it was announced that Natalie Portman will officially star in and produce Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, a film that is based on the bestselling book written by Seth Grahame-Smith and Austen. The big news is that Lionsgate will finance and distribute! Quirk Books published the tome. Read on for the skinny. Though Austen's name is on the book, Grahame-Smith took the lib-erty of adding bloodthirsty flesh-eating zombies to the mix. Portman will produce through her handsomecharlie shingle with Annette Savitch, plus Darko Films' Richard Kelly, Sean McKittrick and Ted Hamm. Described as an expanded version of the Austen classic, the book tells the timeless story of a woman's quest for love and independence amid the outbreak of a deadly virus that turns the undead into vicious killers. Portman will play feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet, who is distracted from her quest to eradicate the zombie menace by the arrival of the arrogant Mr. Darcy. Darko just released "The Box," "World's Greatest Dad" and "I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell." Portman stars in the Jim Sheridan-directed drama "Brothers" for Relativity Media and Lionsgate. Her handsomecharlie banner recently set up "Booksmart" at Fox and is partnered with Plan B at Paramount on an adaptation of the Leanne Shapton book "Important Artifacts," a potential screen vehicle for Portman and Brad Pitt. Her shingle just wrapped production on "Hesher." "Natalie and I are longtime passionate fans of Jane Austen's books and this a fresh, fun and thought-provoking way to approach her work," Savitch said. "The idea of zombies running rampant in 19th Century England may sound odd, but it lends a modern sense of urgency to a well known love story."

    You can't get more classic than this. Jane Austen's classic novel "Pride and Prejudice" is being updated as a zombie horror book and will eventually be adapted into a feature film, reports the Herald Sun. A parody of the English novel is due to be published in April under the name Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, with Hollywood studios already bidding to turn the new book into a blockbuster movie. From The Herald Sun: "The new book has been penned by Los Angeles-based TV comedy writer Seth Grahame-Smith, who has been able to update Austen's original tale because it is out of copyright. Austen fans are in for a shock, with heroine Elizabeth Bennet and her four sisters becoming zombie slayers and taught how to fight like Japanese ninjas by Mr Darcy. "It quickly became obvious that Jane (Austen) had laid down the blueprint for a zombie novel," The Sunday Times quoted Grahame-Smith as saying. "Why else in the original should a regiment arrive on Lizzie Bennet's doorstep when they should have been off fighting Napoleon? "It was to protect the family from an invasion of brain-eaters, obviously." Grahame-Smith said about 85 per cent of his novel is Austen's original text. "I hated her when I was forced to read Austen in school, but when I started re-reading I realised she was a brutal, but very funny, satirist," he said. "I can only aspire to be as mean-spirited as she could be.""
