Boxoffice Shocker(?): ‘Paranormal Activity’ Could Hit $50 Million for Weekend
We haven’t been reporting boxoffice numbers as of late because, frankly, they haven’t been too hot. Thanks to Paramount Pictures and their little film franchise that could, things are heating back up.
According to THR, in an early Halloween present for Paramount, Paranormal Activity 3 (reviews) is on track to earn $25 million at the Friday box office for a whopping weekend gross of as much as $45 million to $50 million — by far the best launch in three months at the domestic box office!
It’s rare for a threequel to score bigger numbers than the two preceeding pics. A year ago, Paranormal Activity 2 opened to $40.7 million.
The Paranormal franchise has been one of the most profitable film series in recent memory. The first Paranormal, which cost $15,000 to produce (a completely fictitious number) and opened in a limited run in September 2009, went on to gross $193.4 million worldwide.
Paranormal 2 cost $3 million to produce, and grossed $177.5 million worldwide. The threequel’s budget is pegged at $5 million.
