[BD Review] ‘The Raven’ Is Mediocre Poppycock

The_Raven_banner

Relativity Media’s The Raven opens today. It stars John Cusack (Hot Tub Time Machine), Alice Eve (Star Trek 2), Luke Evans (The Hobbit) and Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges) and is probably quite a bit bloodier than you’re expecting. But it’s also not very good.

From V For Vendetta director James McTeigue, The Raven is a good looking movie with decent performances, but it’s also deeply stupid. And it counts on the audience to be stupid as well. It’s not that the film isn’t enjoyable in moments, it is. The Raven isn’t an awful viewing experience or anything, it just thinks it’s something it’s not. Truly lush cinematography is utterly wasted in a film in which all the air has been vacuumed out and you’re too busy having your hand held to feel any suspense.

    “deeply stupid”
“it just thinks it’s something it’s not”
    “mediocre poppycock”

I should enjoy this as much as Cabin in the Woods then.

Mediocre PoppyCock? Thats no surprise. John Cusack is in this film. I amazed he still gets work.

I’m with you, Joe-Banger. I don’t know why Hollywood continues to be so in love with that certain range of actors that are as exciting as a plain bowl of oatmeal for breakfast. See also: Dennis Quaid.

I was pretty excited when I first heard that John Cusack was cast in the role, since I think he’s an exceptional actor even today (he just needs a new agent…like really bad), and I could totally see him playing Poe. However, I’ve been hearing that his performance more closely resembles Nic Cage, and that’s not exactly what I want to see from Cusack. John Cusack is John Cusack; Nic Cage is Nic Cage.

Saw it today mostly because I like John Cusack, and thought it was a decent movie. Not AMAZING but effective and has some interesting gory moments. Not sure what the reviewer means by ‘stupid’…. the plot was plausible… but it’s not all that original. Still an okay movie, maybe not worth full price, but matinee, why not?
